Deskjet 2655
macOS 10.13 High Sierra

Hello all! I am having issues with  my DeskJet printer. My family owns the Deskjet 2655 and it is running out of ink FAR too quickly.

For example. As of the time writing this post, we went to our local Best Buy and bought a set of a color and a black 65 cartridge last week. Not the XL cartridges, just the regular ones. It was one of those 2-in-1 packages.

We bought these cartridges and installed them...I want to say last week Tuesday (October 23rd), all in the same day. During that week and this week we printed a total of 28 pages. Not 28 pages per week, 28 pages in all. All of these pages and I mean ALL of them were completely filled with text. 8 out of the 28 had text and a few small images on them.

Each of these 28 pages were printed at 'normal' quality, using the software Preview. I never print pages at 'best' quality and I tend to avoid 'fast draft' because it puts lines through some of the text no matter what troubleshooting I do. As of about 10 minutes ago (from the time of this post), after the 28th page was printed, my printer displayed "low on ink" status.

What gives? These cartridges, according to my research, are supposed to yield around 200 pages (that's HP's guess) and I realize this depends on what exactly I'm printing, how many images it has, etc, but for the cartridge to fully run out after around ~35 pages (I managed to print 7 more after the LOI status displayed), all mostly full of black text and nothing else, is ridiculous. Our family is having to buy cartridges at an alarming rate to replenish our printer, and we don't even print that much, as you can see. What can I do?

And before you ask, yes, I printed a 'print quality' page and the print quality is absolutely fine, so in theory our printer is functioning as it should, it's just...eating up our ink basically. So yeah, what can I do? I've ordered a 65 XL cartridge in black ink and it should be arriving in about 2 days...we'll see if that changes anything, but still, help!!!

Thank you for being a part of HP Forums. I'd like to help.

Power resetting the printer, performing and automated cleaning and updating the printer firmware may improve the page yield. Let's try these steps:

1) Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector

2) Remove all of your ink cartridges from the printer and close the door

3) Remove the power cord from the back of the printer (Do no press the power button)

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer

5) Wait for the printer to turn on completely, then install the ink cartridges.

6.) Download and install the printer firmware update available here

7.) On your Mac, click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.

8.) Click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

9.) In the Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners window, select your printer, and then click Options & Supplies.

10.) Click Utility, and then click Open Printer Utility.HP Utility opens.

11.) Click Clean Printheads , and then click Clean. When prompted, click Cleaning Level 2 to continue the next level of cleaning.

Let me know how it goes!
