Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your HP Deskjet 6940 Printer. I understand that it does not print in  black and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.

Check your printer settings.

Print a diagnostic page.

Print and evaluate a diagnostic page to see if the cartridges or the printer is causing the problem.

  1. Make sure the printer is on and loaded with unused, plain, white paper.

  2. Press and hold the Power button and then press the Cancel button. Release both buttons. The diagnostic page prints.

Check ink levels.

Clean the print cartridges automatically.

  1. Make sure the printer is on and connected to the computer.

  2. Click Start.

  3. Click Settings.

  4. Click Printers and Faxes.

  5. Right-click on the name of your printer and then select Printing Preferences.

  6. Click the Services tab and then click Service this Device.

  7. The printer Toolbox displays. On the Device Services tab, click Clean the Print Cartridge(s).

Figure : Click Clean the Print Cartridge(s)

  8. Click Clean, and then follow the onscreen instructions.

Click here and refer the document to perform the above steps.

You can also refer this article to know how to replace the cartridge.

Let me know if that works.

Cheers.
