For a couple weeks now my HP ENVY 5530 will print black color just fine and then a couple days later the black comes out purple instead? I've changed out 2 or 3 cartridges (Cartridge 61 to be exact) with no change in this issue. Please help!

Hi @MSalvestrin1,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP ENVY 5530 printer is experiencing issues with the black ink cartridge, where the ink is coming out purple instead of black. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:
1. Check for Ink Cartridge Alignment
- Sometimes, misalignment can cause incorrect colors to print. You can run an alignment process through the printer's control panel or via the HP software on your computer:
- Control Panel: Go to the "Setup" or "Tools" menu on the printer and select the "Align Printer" option.
- HP Printer Software: Open the HP software on your computer and look for the "Printer Toolbox" or "Print Settings" to find the alignment option.
2. Check for Residue on the Ink Cartridge or Printhead
- Remove the black ink cartridge and carefully inspect it for any ink residue or dirt on the contacts. Clean the contacts gently with a lint-free cloth. Also, check the printhead for any dried ink or blockage. A clogged printhead can cause ink to mix incorrectly and result in purple prints instead of black.
- Cleaning the Printhead: The HP software or printer control panel may also have an option to clean the printhead.
3. Update Printer Firmware
- Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates fix color-related printing issues. You can check for updates on the HP website or through the HP Smart app.
4. Try a Different Ink Cartridge
- Even if you’ve replaced the ink cartridge, it’s possible that the new cartridge is defective. Try using a different, preferably genuine, black ink cartridge (Cartridge 61) to see if the issue persists.
5. Perform a Print Quality Diagnostic
- You can print a diagnostic page to check the condition of your ink cartridges. On the printer’s control panel, look for an option like "Print Quality Report" or "Print Test Page" and follow the prompts.
6. Ensure Proper Cartridge Installation
- Double-check that the ink cartridges are securely seated in their slots. A loose cartridge can sometimes cause printing issues.
7. Replace the Ink Cartridge if Necessary
- If none of the above solutions work, the ink cartridge might be defective, even if it's new. Consider replacing it with another new genuine HP Cartridge 61 to see if that fixes the issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
