I am having the same issue with my Envy 5540. I've tried all of the solutions in this thread to no avail:

- uninstalled and reinstalled the software (newly downloaded from HP) multiple times.

- attempting to update the firmware on my printer showed that it was already up to date. (the link earlier in the thread yields a 404 error. I got the updated firmware, dated 8/18 through the main support site).

Hooking up via USB is not a tenable solution as the printer and PC are in different parts of the house.

Another point of data for you. I turned on my laptop, which did not have this printer configured at all, and installed the printer from scratch. The first time I tried to print the printer got through the first two inches of the page and spit the paper out. The next time I went to print, my laptop told me that the printer required attention. The screen on the front of the printer said nothing of the sort. It was just sitting at the home screen. I powered the printer off and on, and it printed in glorious color! Except the next time I printed we were back to black and white. The exact same document from the exact same application that just printed in color.

Hi! @Trevil, Thank you for visiting the HP Support Community! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!

Have you tried checking with a different ink cartridge?

Have you tried printing from a different application? Does the issue persist?

Are you able to make a colour copy from the printer?

Are you using HP genuine ink cartridges on the printer?

Replace low, empty or faulty ink cartridges on your printer.

Clean the ink cartridge contacts.

Please try few steps recommended below.

Type printers in the search box. Open the printer settings.
On the right side of the screen select Devices and Printers
Choose the desired printer, click on it with right mouse button, choose Printer properties in the menu
choose the tab Advanced and click on the button Printing defaults
Now, choose the tab Color
Uncheck print in grayscale
Click on apply and select ok
Try printing again and check if it helps.

Or try the steps recommended below.

In the program you are trying to print from, click File, then click Print.
The Print window opens.
Click the button that opens the Properties dialogue box. Depending on the software program you are using, the button might be titled Printer Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer, or Preferences.
Check the Printer Features section of the Advanced Properties menu for the Print in Grayscale setting.
If you are trying to print in colour, make sure the Print in Grayscale setting from the drop-down menu is Off.
Click OK to apply the settings, then click Print.
Check the print quality on the document.

If the copy works fine uninstall the printer software from the root level on your PC and install the full feature printer software.

In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
Select your HP printer.
Select Uninstall.
In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
Click on Drivers tab.
Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.
Select OK.
Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
Close Devices and Printers.

Update the full feature printer software using this link. Click Here

Have you tried checking with a different ink cartridge?

Yes, multiple colored ink cartridges give the same issue.

Have you tried printing from a different application? Does the issue persist?

The issue persists across multiple applications. It was originally discovered in MS Publisher, but also exists in Chrome and other applications. Chrome's print preview actually shows that the print will come out in black and white no matter what the settings show.

Are you able to make a colour copy from the printer?

Yes, I can make a color copy from the printer just fine.

Are you using HP genuine ink cartridges on the printer?

Yes, I am subscribed to the HP ink program, and I only use those cartridges.

This is not an ink issue. This is a software issue with the HP software on my computer. As I pointed out earlier, printing from my iPhone in color works just fine.

Choose the desired printer, click on it with right mouse button, choose Printer properties in the menu
choose the tab Advanced and click on the button Printing defaults
Now, choose the tab Color
Uncheck print in grayscale

There is no Color tab under Printing Defaults. I have looked through every menu, and nothing about color is listed anywhere in this dialogue box.

This brings me to the same dialogue box that does not reference color at all.

If the copy works fine uninstall the printer software from the root level on your PC and install the full feature printer software.

I have done this, twice, and it hasn't worked either time.

Also another point of data for you. My daughter's Windows 10 laptop (same as mine) successfully prints in color to this printer.

@Trevil,

Try creating a new user account on the PC and install the full feature printer software.

It looks like you have selected an incorrect printer as default printer.

Go to control panel devices and printer and select the correct printer and right click and select set as default.

Hope this helps!

Take Care! 🙂

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by me selecting the wrong default printer. How would my default printer selection have anything to do with printing in black and white to this printer? Even if I have some other printer set to the default, printing TO the default would send the job I'm printing to a completely different printer. Please explain how my computer's setting of default printer would in any way affect whether I could print in color to this particular printer? Perhaps you meant I have the wrong driver selected?

I am happy to install the printer under another user, but the rest of your statement confuses me.

HP Recommended

@Trevil,

Once you install the printer, change the bellow settings to print in colour.

1.      Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button, and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.
2.      Right-click the printer that you want to use, and then click Printing Preferences.
3.      Make your choices, and then click OK.
4.      Under option Print colour select colour, then the OK button.

Also, if you still have issues it certinaly sounds like a driver issue. Uninstall the printer software from the root level on the PC and install the windows built in drivers.

It's Fixed!!!

The first part of your post was no help. If you will look back, you should see that the dialogue box that pops up when I viewed the Printing Preferences had no option for color anywhere in it.

That being said, you did add a part in there that I haven't seen or been asked to try before. After removing the device, and running "printui.exe /s" and removing the driver (and installation packages, that's a step you didn't list), I downloaded and installed the basic 5540 Driver. That seemed to repair everything, and now I'm printing in glorious color! Thank you so much for sticking with me.

@Trevil,

Thank you very much for the update.

I'm happy to know your issue got resolved after reinstalling the basic printer drivers.
