Hi @KTUK
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with an Error Code 6 on your HP ENVY 6400 Series printer, which typically indicates a problem with the printer's cartridges, hardware, or wireless connectivity. You've already tried some common troubleshooting steps like removing and replacing the cartridge, performing a factory reset, and checking for paper jams. Let’s work through some other solutions that might resolve this issue.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting for Error Code 6
Check and Re-seat the Ink Cartridges: Sometimes, the issue could be with the cartridge installation. Even if you've already replaced or reseated it, it's a good idea to double-check.
- Turn off the printer.
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Remove both ink cartridges from their slots.
- Inspect the cartridges for any visible damage or ink leaks.
- Clean the contacts on both the ink cartridges and the printhead using a soft cloth or lint-free cloth (dampened with water).
- Reinstall the cartridges, making sure they snap securely into place.
Perform a Hard Reset: A hard reset can sometimes clear any residual errors or glitches.
- Turn off the printer and unplug the power cable from the back of the printer.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cable back in, and then turn the printer back on.
Check for Firmware Updates: The error might also be related to outdated firmware. If your printer is connected to Wi-Fi, you can check for firmware updates via the HP Smart app.
- Open the HP Smart app on your phone or computer.
- Select your printer.
- Go to Printer Settings > Printer Update (or similar).
- Check for any available firmware updates and install them.
Check for Wireless Connectivity Issues: Since your printer is connected via Wi-Fi, an issue with the wireless connection could trigger error codes. You should ensure that the printer is still properly connected to your network.
- Restart your router: Sometimes, the issue could be with your Wi-Fi connection. Power cycle the router by turning it off, waiting 30 seconds, and turning it back on.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi:
- On the printer, press the Wi-Fi icon to open the wireless settings.
- Reconnect your printer to the correct network.
- You can also reset the printer’s network settings by pressing and holding the Wireless button on the printer for 5-10 seconds.
Check for Paper Jams Again**: Even though you've checked for paper jams, sometimes smaller pieces of paper or debris can get stuck in hard-to-reach areas. Inspect the paper tray, output tray, and any inside areas of the printer that you might have missed.
- Carefully remove the paper tray and check for any scraps of paper.
- Use a flashlight to look for anything stuck in the paper feed rollers or printing mechanism.
Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor: HP offers a diagnostic tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor that can help automatically troubleshoot and resolve printing issues, including error codes.
- Download and install HP Print and Scan Doctor from HP’s official website.
- Open the tool and select your printer.
- Follow the on-screen instructions for diagnostics. The tool will check for common issues like connectivity problems or cartridge issues and attempt to fix them.
Perform a Factory Reset (Again): If the error persists, it may be worth trying another factory reset to clear any configuration errors that might be causing the problem.
- Turn off the printer.
- Press and hold the Power button and Wi-Fi button together for about 10-15 seconds.
- The printer should perform a reset, and this could potentially clear out the error code.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
