envy 7858 does not recognize the HP photo paper the paper tray
I can force it to recognize the 4x6 paper only by going into advanced settings, but when you want to print another 4x6, disappointment ensues only to find out the printer returns to only giving you a choice for plain paper or 5x7? **bleep** HP? LOL

Did you set the paper size in Device Settings > Photo tray in the Printer properties?

I am a volunteer and do not work for HP.

turned on the printer the next morning and it wanted to do an update so I hit ok, went back to check device printer settings in laptop and now the settings finally stuck. everything looks good so far. Printed 10 pretty good looking 4x6’s for a budget printer.
STULL THINK ITS PRETTY LAME THAT THE PRINTER IN TWENTY-FRICKIN-19 DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY CONFIGURE THAT

Interesting. I just picked up mine at Costco today, loaded up the included 4x6 paper, and the printer recognizes the paper as 5x7 only. I have tried to unload, load just one sheet, loade many sheets, etc to see if the printer would recognize the proper size but, nope. Updating the firmware was a no-go as well. Wondering if I need to return this and get an Epson again?

Good news! User error. It isn't clear but the photo paper has to be inserted a certain way for the auto paper recognition to work.
Make sure that the paper is pushed as far forward as possible. There is a fence to stop the paper so just push it into the printer as much as it will go. That will enable the auto detect to function properly.
HP, if you are reading this, a little visual cue in the tray to push the paper forward would be great, for future models.
Hope this helps!
