Cannot understand why my printer has stopped printing black. Swapped out cartridges for new and still not resolved. So when printing a page, the printer only reproduces those words highlighted in colour . I therefore for the moment am forced to change black text to a colour in order to print! Any ideas?

Thank you for your time and effort. I only use authentic HP cartridges. Scanning reproduces black OK. I switched everything off and re-booted. Checked the paper quality as you suggested. Last thing printed was some colour recipes for wifey but no photos and regular paper (80gsm) in supply tray. Single cartidge operation with colour only worked OK but same with just black in, resulted in blank output. Although it didn't work yesterday, swapped the cartridge again for the new one (the original was showing one-third capacity) and this time it worked as single cartridge and managed to produce test sheet and the printer now says all well. Wish I could pinpoint for you what worked - must have been a combination of the things you suggested. Thank you once again.

Hello,
I understand that you are having issues printing black (mono).
Would you mind trying to clean printhead?
Use an automated tool to clean the printhead
NOTE:If the printhead is badly clogged, you might need to clean the printhead several times to restore normal print quality.
- Load letter or A4, unused, plain white paper into the paper tray.
- On the printer control panel, press the Down Arrow (
) to select Tools, and then press OK.
- Press the Down Arrow (
) to select Clean Printhead, and then press OK. The printer cleans the printhead, and then prints a printhead test page.
Figure : Example of the printhead test page without defects - Review the print quality on the printhead test page.
This ideally should resolve your issue. In case if you still have issues please contact HP technical support on 18004746836.
Thank you.

Hi Kurseong,
Here is a troubleshooting document that will help you with the black ink not printing: Black Ink not printing
You can try cleaning the ink cartridge.
Sometimes this is a problem with the printer itself. Check at the bottom of this document to see if you printer is still in warranty - you may need a printer exchange.
Best of luck!

Thank you. I have followed the instruction but problem remains. Only single colour cartridge operation works. Cleaning didn't work ... maybe "resting" the cartridge will help restore ... it'll certainly help me ha ha. Wonder wether it's terminal - old machine and even older operator .. one or the other has to be put down (GULP!)
