Envy 4520
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My Envy 4520 printer has had an intermittent problem, which is now continuous. The screen says "Remove and reinstall the indicated ink cartridge, making sure it is correctly installed." It further says, "If this message continues to appear, replace the indicated ink cartridge."

The indicated cartridge is the color one (HP 63), which is low on ink but not empty. Any time I open the cover and pop out the cartridge then pop it back in, I get one good print job, then the message re-appears.

I have a new HP 63 color cartridge, but I want to be certain that this will fix the problem -- if the printer itself is shot, and I have to buy a new one, I may have wasted the money used to buy a new cartridge.

Does anyone know if a new cartridge is likely to get rid of these messages?

Welcome to HP forums, I see that you are getting cartridge error.

I would like to assist you.

  • Are you using genuine HP ink cartridge?
  • Did you update the printer firmware?

Follow the below steps to fix this issue:

Perform a power reset on the printer.

  1. Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  4. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  5. Plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector and printer.
  6. Turn on the printer.

Update the printer firmware

Thank you, but... I eventually got a message telling me that the cartridge in question had an actual error.  I replaced it with my newly acquired color cartridge, went through the alignment procedure, and the trouble was gone.  So I don't really need any more assistance.  Thanks anyway!

I have the problem, have tried all the solutions over and over to no avail.
Both carts are genuine HP. The carts had been working fine and are not empty.
The firmware is up to date. The color cart is the problem.
It finally occurred to me that I still had the old empty cart.
I then noticed a big difference between the two carts.
I realized the defective cart had a different design! See image.
OLD cart markings: SR13, SE 3, 2019/10/23 2
DEF cart markings: SR 6, SJ11, 2021/02/15 1
I have no instant ink and have had the printer for years, so I assume I'm screwed.

Any advice would be welcome.

EDIT: Well, although I'd cleaned the cart and printer contacts with denatured alcohol when this problem first occurred,

I just now gently cleaned the cart contacts with melamine foam (a la Mr Clean) and rinsed with the alcohol.

So far, problem solved!
