HP Envy 4522 AIO-printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The printer functions fine, but refuses to print Magenta for some time now. I participate in the HP Instant Ink-program and the color-inklevel is sufficient for now.

Is there a solution.

I had a problem last week in that my printer was not printing yellow so pictures were coming out lilac. After carrying out various checks (see below) and even inserting a new HP colour print cartridge I still had the problem. I checked on here and someone was advised that it was a hardware issue and they would need to get it repaired or buy a new printer. They bought a new printer!!! However I have now solved the problem.

1) First of all I went into Tools and printed a Print Quality Report which clearly showed that only Black, Pink and Blue were printing. Yellow was missing although when I checked ink levels (the drip emoji next to the spanner on the toolbar) both cartridges were showing as almost full. Up to this point my printer had been printing in full colour though the last picture was half the correct colour and half lilac. After this everything lilac.

2. Then in Tools I selected Clean Printhead and as recommended carried this out several times. No difference.

3) I then as recommended removed the cartridge and gave it a good shake and stood it upside down for several hours. I could see no sign of yellow where the ink comes out, only pink and blue. I concluded that this was a dud cartridge and yellow had run out ahead of the other colours so I then inserted a new cartridge. Don't forget to remove the tab as I did! When I had inserted correctly and tested no difference. Very odd then that the Print Quality Report showed no yellow. I was beginning to think it was a hardware issue.

4) I then as recommended in the blog cleaned round the print cartridge head with a damp cotton bud. When I placed a tissue over the print head on both the old and the new cartridge only blue and pink showed on the tissue.

5) Last ditch attempt. I had one new cartridge left, the most recently received. When I removed the tab I could clearly see yellow, pink and blue. When I inserted this one it worked. I had had the other cartridge for a while so maybe the yellow dries out quicker or perhaps I had a dud batch. I only use genuine HP cartridges as I belong to the print scheme.

I had contact with the helpdesk of HP Instant Ink. Their solution was to send a new cartridge to replace my (very old, but not empty) colourcartridge. I hope that this wil solve the missing colour magenta, like your missing colour yellow.
