@dmfieldman, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Try making a standalone copy in black and check if it works.
Reset the printer
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Update the printer firmware
Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your MAC.
Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
Check the estimated ink levels
On the printer control panel, touch the Ink icon to display the current estimated ink levels.
Replace any low or empty ink cartridges.
Perform step 13 mentioned in this document.
You may also try step 10 in the same document.(Skip if already tried)

There is another thread that is listed as "HP Envy 5055 Black Ink Won't Print". Surprised you did not see that. There are some suggestions with that.
Here was my reply....
I had the same issue - black ink ran out, installed a new cartridge and nothing. I did everything from uninstalling/reinstalling everything HP, clearing the print spooler, draining power, cleaning heads (from printer tools), rebooting computer and printer numerous times. I was ready to go buy a new ink cartridge tomorrow but in desperation I took a wet Q-tip and ran it right down where the ink comes out on the new cartridge (right where they say don't do that in the instructions) and instantly the ink starting coming out. I dried it off and the black is printing perfectly now. Who would have guessed? Good luck to all of you that made your way to this forum. My suspicion is that some adhesive from the protective cover got stuck to the place where the ink comes out but that is just a guess.
