I am trying to replace ink cartridges - which I have done several times previously. This time the printer won't open - the hinges in the back appear to be jammed or stuck. The lids will open a little bit, but I am afraid trying to force them will break one or more hinge. How can I get them to open easily?

Allow me to welcome to HP Support Forums! It is a great platform to get help from the community, get suggestions and find what has worked for others!


Going through your post, I understand that you are having issues while replacing the cartridges. Going through your post, this looks like a physical block on the printer. The ink cartridge door should open easily even if the printer is powered off.


Try performing a power drain on the printer as suggested below:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

I have the same problem. Trying to change ink and the cartridge access door has stuck and I’m scared it will break the hinges if I pull too hard. I followed the previous reply’s instructions but this hasn’t worked. Any more ideas what the problem could be?
