I have the same issue of 5540 not printing, message saying offline, scan dpctor saying out of paper. I pull out the power plug , reinsert it and printer prints. then tomorrow the same sequence reappears. I have an ACER laptop and am on Windows 10.

Hi @golfer71909,

Thanks for stopping by the HP community. A very good day to you. 🙂 I reviewed the post regarding assistance with printer offline issues. I will be delighted to assist you here. 🙂

Superb description and stupendous diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require information regarding this:

  • Did you make copies directly from the printer?
  • Did this happen after a recent power outage or surge?

It could be a hardware issue with the printer or the cartridges.

For a start please perform these steps:

  • Please make 2 copies directly from the printer without any communication from the computer.
  • If it copies fine then it could be a driver issue.

Please follow these steps:

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Remove all instances of the same.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers.
  • Restart the PC again.

Then download the latest full feature driver from http://hp.care/2uwSwMW and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

This should fix it for you.

If it does not, then please perform steps 2, 3, 4,5,6 from this link: http://hp.care/2uwSuEO for fixing printer offline issues.

Also under Step 9 other steps to try please perform these steps:

  • Disable IPv6 (network connections only)
  • Move the wireless printer closer to the router

If it fails to copy and says the printer is out of paper, then the issue could be hardware related with the paper pick sensors.

Please perform all the required steps for paper pick issues from this link: http://hp.care/2uwZGkr and check if the issue gets resolved.

If it does not, then the printer’s hardware is faulty and needs to be replaced by calling hp phone support.

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://hp.care/2r9wSvP

  • Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.

  • Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

They will be happy to assist you immediately. If the unit is under warranty repair services is taken care of by the manufacturer’s warranty

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat. 🙂

I'm halfway to solving the problem.

(1) In trying to find a solution to the problem, I discovere certain service files on my Dell laptop had been corrupted by a virus.  That laptop was sent to be serviced, but I haven't tried printing since it came back.  My laptop's problem may have been one reason why I couldn't print wirelessly.

(2) I live in an area where power outages are not uncommon.  I unplugged my router and then pluggd it back in.  I was abe to print wirelessly from my Lenovo laptop.

Nonetheless, the scan doctor was not helpful in diagnosing or fixing the problem.

Hi @golfer71909,

I read your quick response completely. I am really happy for you that the issue has been resolved. You've displayed brilliant technical expertise, a great temperament, and immense patience to get the issue resolved. Kudos to you for a job well done. 🙂 Based on your first post I gave you the steps to resolve the issue.  I did not know the

So the troubleshooting steps given were apt to the situation mentioned in your earlier post. I am really happy for you in this regard that you have a great working printer as it prints  on a wireless network from the Lenovo computer. That establishes with concrete evidence that the Dell computer here is the culprit as it was infected with a virus and turned in to get it fixed. The HP printer and the Lenovo computer are working perfectly as the functionality of both have been proved since the printer prints from that computer.

It has been an absolute privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂 Trust me, I've done all I can to assist you, by keeping your best interest in mind. I honestly hope the printer works great and stays healthy for a long time. 🙂

A lot of time effort and research went into providing the required solution. Reinstall the Hp printer software on the Dell computer and this should fix the issue.

If this helps, please mark my post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others and please give the same post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Please remember if you as a customer do it, it will motivate us to assist a lot of other customers and churn out more solutions for their benefit.

Thanks and have a beautiful year ahead and take care. 🙂

About a month ago I did a reset to Windows 10. After that, my 5540 would no longer work. I am connected via USB. I have done all the steps as outlined below. Whenever I get to the point of USB connection, the procedure doesn't reconize the USB. The cable is good and all connections are secure. I contacted HP support via telephone and paid $19.99 for a service call and she did a remote and she failed. She said my printer was bad. I went out and purchased a new HP Envy 7640, went through all the setup procedures and it didn't work. I took it back to Best Buy for a refund. Drivers, trouble shooters, nothing has worked. Any other ideas?

Greetings @Boris47

Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.

I understand that you are unable to configure the printer over a USB connection, is that right?

Not to worry, I will be glad to assist you.

Have you tried to configure the printer using Windows built-in drivers?

Request you try the steps suggested in this HP Article to resolve the issue you are facing.

Let me know if this helped.

Chimney thanks for the reply. I went through these steps and at step eight there were no yellow exclamation marks. I had already deleted or uninstalled everything HP and attempted to start over several times. To be honest, I got very tired of the whole ordeal and took my computer and printer to my local repair people. They had to install an different HP printer driver, some 4000 series version to get it to work. Cost me, but still less than buying another printer. Not a HP printer anyway as that didn't work. I guess it's not all HP's fault, as some of the blame goes to Windows 10 too. Sad but true.

Thanks for the reply and glad to hear that your printer is working fine now with the help of a different printer driver.

I have the same problems with my HP ENVY 5540.  The printer works well for a while then I get a "offline" but the printer is online and the network see's it.  This is more than an annoyance.
