I have an HP Envy 5540 that is connected via USB to my desktop. I can scan a document from the desktop. A print job goes into the queue, status changes to Printing, then disappears after a few seconds without printing. The printer can rint from within the HP software but from nowhere else including a Windows Test Page
I have serached the forum and tried several 'fixes', reinstalled the drivers & software, switched ports, tried a system restore, did a Reg Hack, and even tried the HP Print Dr but to no avail. No matter what I seem to do, it will not print from and software but it's own or print a test page

Hi,
as @DavidSMP is out of the office today, I'm replying to you.
You've done a remarkable job performing the steps. I truly appreciate your efforts and your patience.
Ideally, the steps should have fixed the issue by now. The evidence points towards the drivers/software.
You may attempt to create a new user account in Windows and then install the printer drivers in the new user account. Please refer to "Creating a new account in Windows 7" from this HP document.
NOTE: If you're going to connect the printer via USB, then do not connect it initially. Begin the installation first and later there will be a prompt to connect the printer. That's when you may connect the printer.
You may download and install the printer drivers via this link.
Hope this helps. Keep me posted. Cheers! 🙂

Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums. After reading your post I see that you need assistance regarding print jobs disappearing. It will be a delight to assist you here.
Superb analysis and brilliant diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you on that score. 🙂
For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:
- Did this happen after a power outage or surge?
- Did it occur after a software change or update?
For now, try these steps:
Right-click the Start menu and select Run
Type Services.msc and press OK.
Locate and stop the Print Spooler service
5. Browse to c:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers
Rename W32X86 to W32x86.old
Rename x64 to x64.old
Note: if any of these folders fail to rename reboot your PC and then Continue following the steps starting from Step 4...
6. Restart your computer.
7. Reinstall the HP Software and check for any difference
If the issue persists try these steps:
- Press “Windows key” + “r” to get the “Run” window.
- Type "services.msc" to get Services – Go to “Print spooler” – Right-click and “Stop” the service.
- Now again open "Run" - Type “spool” and ok - Go to PRINTERS folder - delete everything in that folder.
- Go to services again - Start the print spooler.
- Now check for issue resolution.
If the issue persists, also try clean installing the printer drivers. Here are the steps:
- First, unplug the USB cable from the printer, if present.
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Photosmart printer entries and uninstall them.
- Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
- Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
- Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
- Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
- Restart your computer.
Now click http://hp.care/2rIgkZ5 to download and install the software.
- Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
For further assistance try all the relevant steps from this link: http://hp.care/2CMceIG (HP Printers - Print Jobs Disappear from the Print Queue and Do Not Print (Windows 8)
The steps should be relevant to your operating system also.
If this does not do the trick, please download the Windows Built-in drivers by following instructions from this link: http://hp.care/2o3acvH
Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat.

To the best of my knowledge there was no power outage or surge. No software was installed on the PC with the exception of antivirus updates ... I'm in the process of going through your steps, some have been completed before but I'm going through them step by step again to see if it will resolve the problem.

Updating as I go.
Been through all the listed steps in the main body of the replay. Issue still present.
Went through the majority of the steps listed in the the
HP Printers - Print Jobs Disappear from the Print Queue and Do Not Print (Windows 😎 -https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04372450
with the exception of the renaming of the HPBXPSRENDER.DLL file as it is not a file located on my PC. I'm guessing here but is that a Windows 8 specific DLL.
I'm about to attempt the steps listed in
HP Printers - Installing and Using the Windows Built-in Print Driver
and see where that gets me.

And to add to my confusion ... the HP Print DR can find no issue with the device (except to say it's out of paper when it isn't) and was able to print it's test page. The printer still will not print from Windows or any other software besides HP.
