envy 5540

Hi Guys,

Recently bought the Envy 5540 all-in-one for home use and am having a nightmare trying to connect it to the wifi; Any help is appreciated. Found a few similiar posts but no troubleshooting seems to be working.

Out of the box and following the wifi setup wizard gives me constant failures - 'Mac address filtering may be enabled on your wireless router....' error.

Things i have tried with no avail:

1) Hard resets of printer/router

2) Restoring printer back to factory setttings

3) Log into router (mac filtering is off) - toggled it on for science and added the printer to trusted device (turned off again at present)

4) Temporarily made wifi connection open - printer still wouldn't connect.

5) Managed to connect printer to S7 phone via wifi hotspot and update printer to latest software.

Currently using Sky as a provider with a sky stock netgear router; But never had this issue with any printer before.

thanks

David

I myself use TP Link.  Archer C7.

You might ask your ISP if you can get just a modem from them and you will add your own router.  Especially if they charge a monthly fee for their 'rental'.   You might ask them also if you can buy your own modem (on your ISP approved list) yourself and save the monthly rental fee.

Otherwise, full bridge mode and add your own router.

Hello David,

For this thread, please provide the Mac iOS for each device, the S7 phone and is there a Mac.

Maybe try Apple Support.  Google for:  "Apple Support Mac address filtering may be enabled on your wireless router ...error

So you should get several threads to check out.  I'll let you read them for ideas.

In what country/region is Sky located.  You say you have never had a printer cause this issue, but you possibly never have had the 5540.  HP is slow at getting software updated and they may never figure out the Sky router has problems.

If you receive no solution, repost in the Software and Drivers Forum.  In the upper right of this page, click on "Post a New Question"  In the "Enter Search Term" enter the subject:   HP 5540 printer software not work with Sky Netgear Router

Choose the board "Printer and Software Drivers"

Fill out all entry lines including Operating System(s).   Provide the good detail again, as you have done.

Thanks for the reply RichAnt,

There are no apple products invovled. I get the Mac filtering error when trying to connect the printer to the router by using the setup wizard in the printer settings.

However, just for clarity I am using a HP Laptop here, loaded with Windows 10Pro, and I managed to connect the printer to the Samsung S7 to update the printer software. The phone is running Android 7.0 Nougat.

Sky are my ISP, I am located in the midlands, UK.

I'll give the other forum a whirl if I get no luck in here..

thanks

Hello again David,

Thank you for the excellent summaries (including your first), which is very helpful; but it's needed.  Good job.

Responding to the "Mac address filtering" that caused my confusion about the operating systems.

Please wait a minute before going on the other forum,  while I type up procedures for thelaptop with  Windows 10 Pro ASAP.  We'll see what we can do for it.

The hard reset of the printer is not needed, if it functions perfectly (copy, print, scan) on the Samsung phone.

So adding onto the messsage, to clarify, by updating the printer on the S7, the printer's software was downloaded onto the Samsung phone (only).  It probably needs to be additionally installed onto the laptop.

So, we will uninstall the printer's software (only on the laptop) and reinstall the software on the laptop.

With the printer turned on and working on the laptop, please run this free REVO uninstall program.

-   In the window that opens, highlight by a left click on all listings of Envy 5540.  Then at the top of the page click Uninstall.  (it does not affect the phone)

https://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

- Download the most up-to-date printer software.  DO NOT use the disc that came in the box, as it may not be up to date.  You have the source, but here they are.  There are two sources.  Follow directions, precisely.

-The easiest is (with the printer turned on) go to 123.HP.com and it will automatically find your computer and download/install the printer's software/driver onto the computer.  It should then work seamlessly at that point.

-The other official HP Support page is this link.  With printer on, click on Software and Drivers > Go > Download.  Again, it should work after it completes.  Save this link -  lots of info.

Please reply with results.  (other problems may be present)  Good luck.

Thanks for the reply, still no luck with this however..

Cleaned the computer of previous software and installed fresh from the HP source.

The software basically refers me back to the 'printers setup wizard' to initially to connect to the router. Obviously, this then takes me round in circles again with the 'Mac filtering error'This is the diagnostic printout after printer/wifi errorThis is the diagnostic printout after printer/wifi errorJust for reference:Software troubleshoot screenshotJust for reference:Software troubleshoot screenshot

I've added a couple of pictures/screenshots - Maybe there is something simple i'm missing here..

Sorry for jumping in here but just a few more questions and things to try.

Make and model of modem and router and any more networking equipment?

In the printer using the front panel, reset the printer back to Factory Defaults.   Now reset it back to Network Defaults.  Yes both if they are there.

In the printer disable IPv6.  Make sure printer is at least 5 feet away from the router.

You said that you disabled all security and still did not connect to your router.   This is not good.

Try again to connect with no security to your SSID with no password.   Status now?

Thanks for the reply sabertooth04,

The Make is a Netgear - Its a standard router provided by my ISP (Sky) with their branding all over it, yet no model number..

As asked - Restored back to factory plus restored the Network default, disabled the IPv6 as requested, disabled all security and made connection open - Still no luck, giving me the mac filtering error in the diagnostic print out.

Understand your concern about it not connecting to the open connection, However, as mentioned - It will find a hotspot generated by my phone, pass the security and connect.

And RichAnt - Seriously.. Solved or not.. Thanks for your time, it is appreciated.

EDIT

What i'll do (unless anyone has any more suggestions tonight) is take the printer to work tomorrrow. I run a officejet pro 8720 on that network with no issues - So it should isolate whether its the 5540 or my router/home network.

ISP provided gateway, not router.  You have a modem/router combo unit which are terrible for wireless connectivity especially when the ISP uses their crippled firmware.

Your test is a good one and I'm betting it will connect since it connects to your phone hot spot.

What you will most likely need to do is put the gateway unit in full bridge mode  (makes it a modem only), and buy your own high quality router that YOU have full control over.  Now you control all aspects including firmware upgrades.

Let us know.

Sabertooth04 Ok, got it, apologies for my misuse of the terminology - Layman here. (as a side, it does make me wonder if this is why my wifi why regularly drops out!)

Ok, printer is at work - Followed network setup wizard and connected first time with no problems. As suspected, the problem seems to be my home network.

I'll have a look once home tonight in my 'gateway unit' settings for this bridge mode - I understand from previous brief reading that my ISP are notoriously awkward in allowing third party hardware. I'm pretty ignorant on this subject though.

Do you have any recommendations for a good router? I may have time today to go out and pick one up.

thanks

EDIT

An innocent word got auto bleeped out - Changed it, however its a colloquialism with multiple meanings.
