Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks

My computer now won't print. There was a HP update on the 17th June that must have updated automatically.

It says that 'Printer is not found". Printer on, wifi working and tested, computer in systems preferences recoognises there is a printer (the named printer) connected and 'idle'.

Have switched off both, reset but I cannot get the printer to recognise the 'device' (computer) or the computer to print to the printer.

Stumped. Has anyone any ideas? It;s appreciated. Fiona

@FCGB,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are unable to print from your computer.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

In order that I may provide you with an accurate solution, I will need a few more details.

  • When was the last time the printer was working fine?
  • Have you made any software or hardware changes on the computer?

While you respond to that, I recommend you remove the printer form your computer and then add the printer as an AirPrint printer and check.

Here is how it is done.

  1.  Search the Mac for Print, and then click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners in the list of results.

  2. Find the printer names that match your printer from the list of devices.

  1. Figure : Printers and Scanner window with multiple names of a printer in the list

Printers and Scanner window with multiple names of HP Photosmart 7520 printers shown in the list
  2. If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button  at the bottom of the list. Leave one 'idle' printer in the list that matches your printer if available and use this printer as the Default printer.

  3. Try printing again.

    • If the printer prints, you can stop troubleshooting.

    • If the printer remains offline or displays an error, continue to the next step.

Step 4: Delete the existing print queue and add the printer

Remove the printer queue from the list of printers, and then add it again. Doing so creates a new printing session.

  1. Make sure your Mac is connected to the Internet.

  2. In the Printers list, click your HP printer, and then click the Minus button  to delete it.

  3. Click the Add button .

  4. Find and select the name of your printer from the Printer list, and then click Add to add your printer. Do not select an HP Fax driver.

       NOTE:

If your printer does not display in the list, make sure the printer is connected, turned on, has power, and is ready to print.

Figure : Example of the printer selection list

Image: The Add window showing a selection of printers with one model selected.
  5. Click Print Using or Use.

  6. Select the name of your printer (if available) or AirPrint.

Your new printer queue displays in the Printers list in an Idle status .

  7. Try printing again.

If you continue to face the issue, I recommend you update the printer firmware and test.

Follow the steps in the below article to update the printer firmware.

Hi, Thanks for the response to my enquiry as to why my printer is not printing.

I acted on your instructions with no resolution.

I have also removed/deleted the printer twice, removed and reinstalled the software, been through m disk utility repairs.

The printer installs okay, you can print a test sheet from the actual printer itself i.e. if you print off the wifi configurations from thetouchpad on the printer, but you cannot print a test from the computer to the printer despite the printer being recognised by the computer. It says Printer not responding. If you open the print queue, it says 'The printer may not exist or unable to print at this time.' and then 'Printer is not responding'.

The printer is only just over a year old, and is a home computer so I don't use it all the time but I need it to do some important things and would like to get it resolved as I've probably had 30 prints out of it and surey it should do more?!

I have just found a lead to connect printer to computer so it would seem that there is something wrong in the printer talking to the computer via wifi. Even though the wifi is enabled and working on both, neither can use it to talk between each other.

I can live with a cable but would prefer to use wifi, can you advise?

Hi, This is just a link to an online article that I could have (and did) find myself. And not very helpful.

These troubleshooting solutions I have tried.

Turning on and off again at the power.

Uninstalling and reinstalling printer

Emptying print queue

Disk Utility repairs

Wifi connectivity reset

The printer isn't piced up by either my imac, macbook, ipad which is suggesting it is a problem with the printer's response via wifi.

As I say it now works with the lead, but not the wifi although the wifi is connected on both the printer and the computer.

The printer is not a heavy used item, in fact very light usage and only a year and four months old. It hasn't lasted that long operationally which considering the brand is surprising.

Do you have any real suggestions to resolve this?

Thanks Fiona
