HP Envy 5540
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)
I bought a genuine HP printer cartridge double pack - tricolour and black - model 302 as the box said it was suitable for the HP Envy 5540 series. However, when I replaced the existing colour cartridge (model 62) with the 302, the printer failed to recognise the new one. When I put the original back in the printer there was no error. What's the problem? Why should there be a problem using genuine HP products and how can this be solved?

Hello Grandad,

It seems you are going to have to purchase HP 62 cartridges and discard or get refund for the HP 302.  Unfortunately, I find that HP 302 is NOT COMPATIBLE with the 5540 printer.  Sorry.  Does the box actually list the 5540  Does the HP 302 Black Cartridge work, that's unusual?  ... and needs pursuing with HP!

For HP 5540 printer, both Currys.com and Argos.com reflect only HP 62 cartridges (same in USA).

Googling finds HP 62 tricolor is compatible with numerous Envy and OfficeJets including the 5540.

HP 302 tricolor ink is IS NOT LISTED as compatible with 5540.  It is compatible with:  Deskjet 1110 Deskjet 2130 AiO, 2132 AiO Deskjet, Deskjet 2134 AiO, 3630 AiO Deskjet, Officejet 3830 AiO, Officejet 3832 AiO, Officejet 3833 AiO, Officejet 3834 AiO, - HP DeskJet 1110, HP OfficeJet 4650, HP ENVY 4520

Let me know if this helps and  Kudos are appreciated researching this for you.

Hi Rich Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to research my problem. The black cartridge is also incompatable. It looks like I will have to pursue this directly with HP as the container box clearly states the 302 should be compatable. Unfortunately I can't take it back to the retailer as I have no receipt. Once again, many thanks for your response.

I have just installed genuine HP62XL cartridges and the printer tells me to 'Remove and reinstall the indicated ink cartridge, making sure it is correctly installed, and then touch OK' I have tried this several times over 3 days and get the same response. Any ideas?
