HP Envy 5546
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Dear HP users and mods,

I am really at the end of my tether trying to get the HP Envy printer to work on my son's high end gaming computer (and my old and battered laptop for that matter). In fact, since I bought it over a year ago, the only device it's worked on (nearly without problem) is my Samsung Galaxy.

Having followed all help guides here and spent several hours uninstalling and reinstalling the software and drivers, I'm still no closer to being able to print off the computers.

At present the following is happening:

The printer is recoginsed by Windows as my default after it's installed. I can print test pages. BUT when I print from software such as Word or Adobe, at first the job appears in the print list and then after a few seconds it just disappears (see pictures below). As mentioned, uninstalling and reinstalling software and drivers hasn't helped and the printer itself works from my phone. But what I need to print urgently isn't transferable! Seriously, it's reached the point whereby I am close to throwing the printer in the bin and writing off the money I've wasted on ink and specialist paper. Very very disapointed.

Please help!

So after reading more threads and trying to uninstall all the old drivers manually (which I think I did) the printer still won't work from my Windows 10 PC (which I was assued it would when I bought it), but happily prints away from Google Docs and my mobile phone. Seriously, in this day and age, how can a printer just not work with a Windows running desktop?!

After buying it and spending a small fortune on fancy ink cartridges, to then find out I have to pay nearly 20 pounds to get technical assistance just to get the printer working is an absolute joke from HP. A truly terrible way to deal with consumers. 😞

Does this forum have live streaming functionality for when I throw the dumbest smart printer in the world out the window?!

@BenWilts,

Thank you for showing your interest in HP Support Forums. It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel. I see from your post you are having issues while printing from your HP Envy printer. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you recently made any changes before the issue started?

Have you tried to run HP Print and Scan Doctor?

Are you having issues only while printing from word or from other applications as well?

Have you tried to do a root level uninstall and reinstall?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

If you are facing any issue while using the printer then try using HP Print and Scan Doctor (PSDR). PSDR is an automated tool which can diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems. Please go to this link: HP Printers - Using HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows)  to download and run HP PSDR. Once you open the program, select your printer and click on “Fix Printing” to automatically diagnose and fix the issue.

If the issue persists, as you have mentioned in your post that you are able to print from other devices, this definitely looks like a software related issue.

  • Press “Windows key” + “r” to get the “Run” window.
  • Type "services.msc" to get Services – Go to “Print spooler” – Right-click and “Stop” the service.
  • Now again open "Run" - Type “spool” and ok - Go to PRINTERS folder - delete everything in that folder.
  • Go to services again - Start the print spooler.
  • Now check for issue resolution.
  • If the issue persists, also try clean installing the printer drivers. Here are the steps:
  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Envy printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Please click here to download and install the software.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Hope this answers your question.

Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. 🙂
