Envy 5640
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My Envy 5640 printer has become disconnected from my laptop saying no driver available. I have used scandoctor to install latest software/driver but it gets to the last step saying installation successful and printer connected but when press "Finish" button it goes to a blank screen which if you try to close a prompt comes up saying installation not complete and need to "continue" (going to printer it says "driver is unavailable"). I have uninstalled and installed a number of times all getting the same result.

Our other laptop, ipad and smartphones are all connected and print using wireless no problem.

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

This is a great place to get support, find answers to your technical queries.

I recommend you delete the driver at the root level and retry, follow the steps below:

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose `Delete' or `Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

Then, Click on this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-envy-5640-e-all-in-one-printer-series/... to download and install the drivers.

Many Thanks for the help. Actioned all steps suggested but unfortunately no success, still getting same result.

When connection failed I received a link to HP app with a number of further options to resolve connection issue but none of these resolved the issue either.

Thanks for the reply,

Uninstall the drivers again and use this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-envy-5640-e-all-in-one-printer-series/... to install the basic drivers and check if this works.

If the issue persists, Try to install the printer with the built-in drivers using this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01796879

Keep me posted, how it goes!

Many Thanks Raj for coming back to me again and perservering in trying to resolve this issue.

The first option had same result as before. In the second I got windows to automatically search for a driver and an error message came up saying it had encountered an error attempting to install the driver. Then it said "The printer driver is not compatible with a policy enabled on your computer that blocks NT 4.0 drivers". Does this help to identify a solution?

Interestingly while on the windows page I clicked a troubleshooting icon which enabled me to open the printer and I was able to operate the scanner (it didnt give me an option to try and print) so some part of the link is there.

Thanks again for your support
