The printer shows error E1 after I try to print A4 pages.
Initially it worked without problems, but now it's been like this for more than a year. I have to change size to A5 and set "fit to paper" - only then it prints A5 on my A4 sheets of paper.

Hi @MichalDresden,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The HP Envy 6020 showing an error E1 typically indicates a paper size mismatch. Here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Check Paper Size Settings in Printer Driver
Make sure the paper size settings in your printer driver match the actual paper size loaded in the tray.
- Windows:
- Open the Control Panel.Go to Devices and Printers.Right-click on your HP Envy 6020 and select Printer properties.Go to the General or Advanced tab and click on Printing Preferences.Set the paper size to A4.
- Mac:
- Open System Preferences.Go to Printers & Scanners.Select your HP Envy 6020 and click on Options & Supplies.Click on Options or Driver and ensure the paper size is set to A4.
2. Check Paper Size Settings in the Application
Ensure that the document or application you are printing from is set to A4 paper size.
- In Microsoft Word:
- Go to File > Print.Ensure the paper size is set to A4.
- In Adobe Acrobat Reader:
- Go to File > Print.Ensure the paper size is set to A4.
3. Check Printer's Control Panel Settings
- Navigate through the printer's control panel menu to ensure that the default paper size is set to A4.
- Home > Setup > Printer Settings > Paper Settings > Paper Size > A4.
4. Reset the Printer
Sometimes a simple reset can resolve the issue.
- Turn off the printer.Unplug the printer from the power source.Wait for about 60 seconds.Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
5. Update Firmware and Drivers
Ensure that your printer’s firmware and drivers are up to date.
- Visit the HP Support website and download the latest firmware and drivers for your HP Envy 6020.
6. Recalibrate the Printer
Perform a printhead alignment and calibration.
- On the printer control panel, go to Settings.Navigate to Tools.Select Align Printer and follow the on-screen instructions.
7. Load Paper Correctly
- Ensure that the A4 paper is loaded correctly in the paper tray and that the paper guides are snug against the paper without bending it.
8. Clean Paper Feed Rollers
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.Open the access door to locate the paper feed rollers.Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the rollers.
9. Test with Different Paper
- Sometimes, the issue might be with the specific batch of paper you are using. Try using a different batch or brand of A4 paper.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
