HP ENVY Photo 6230 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My printer has been stuck on the first dot on start-up for two weeks.
I've tried turning off the power and holding down the on/off button as described in other posts, but without success.
I've also performed a factory reset, but it returns to the first dot.
What can you advise?

@Phil-London, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Restart the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Wait for 60 seconds and connect the power cord back in.
  5. Turn on the printer.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows only):

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

I hope this helps.

I downloaded the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool, but it could not find my printer. Similarly the Software and Diver Downloads page failed to find a printer.

Hey @Phil-London,

Thank you for your response

It sounds like your printer is in a state where it’s not properly communicating with your computer, which can be frustrating. Since the HP Print and Scan Doctor couldn’t detect your printer and the firmware update page also couldn’t locate it, let’s try a few more things to troubleshoot:

Check the Connection Type

USB: Ensure the USB cable is securely plugged into both the printer and the computer. If you have another USB cable, try swapping it out to see if that resolves the issue.

Wi-Fi: If the printer is connected over Wi-Fi, make sure your computer is on the same network as the printer. You can check the printer's network settings by printing a network configuration page from the printer.

Remove the Printer from Windows and Re-add it

Sometimes the printer can get "stuck" in the system settings.

Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners on your Windows 11 PC.

Find the HP ENVY 6230 in the list and click Remove Device.

After removing it, restart your computer.

Once back in Windows, go to Printers & Scanners again and click Add a Printer or Scanner.

See if your printer shows up. If not, try adding it manually by selecting The printer that I want isn’t listed, and then follow the steps to search for it via USB or Wi-Fi.

Run HP Smart:

Let me know how things go or if you’re still running into trouble after these steps!

Take care and have a good day.
