I have run cleaning and alignment options on the printer multiple times, updated the drivers, and even swapped out the ink cartridges. I get light horizontal lines through print that are particularly noticeable on dark images when I print. The lines are evenly spaced about half an inch apart.

Greetings!

Welcome to the HP Support Community. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries. I have reviewed your post and I understand, there's an issue with the print quality.

Appreciate you trying the steps. Don’t worry, I’m here to help! To better assist you -

1) Are you experiencing this issue while making a copy as well?

2) Are you using genuine HP ink?

Let's begin by printing a print quality report -

1) On the control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon.
2) Swipe up on the display, touch Reports, and then touch Print Quality Report.

Evaluate the report for any defects. If there are any defects found, try these steps -

Step 1 Clean the ink cartridges -

1) On the control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon.
2) Swipe up on the display, and then touch Printer Maintenance.
3) Touch Clean Cartridges, and then touch Continue.

Step 2 Align the printer -

1) On the printer control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard, and then touch the Setup icon.
2) Swipe up on the display, and then touch Printer Maintenance.
3) Touch Align Cartridges and then touch Continue.

If the issue still persists, this would confirm a hardware issue. I have sent you a Private Message with the service options.

Check next to your profile Name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it. Click here for more details on how to access the private messages on HP Forums.

I have been using authentic HP cartridges.

I've done a few Print Quality Diagnostics and I find that generally text and small lines look nice, but there are artifacts in the heavy black blocks. I have done several cleanings and alignments and have seen no improvement.

This is true even outside the diagnostic. A page of text looks fine, but if you print a picture of a black cat there will be lines running through the cat or any sufficiently dark shadows in the print. It seems to be an issue solely with the black cartridge.

I have the identical problem.  I have tried the two steps without success.  What next?

I cleaned and aligned as it said , I put in new cartridges and still have the issue with the lines, seems to me these “HP cartridges”  are bad.
