This is the worst printer I have ever owned. It ALWAYS thinks it's out of paper and the only way to get it to print it to completely reset it. It will NOT print in color from my laptop, only from my phone. This is the biggest waste of money I've ever spent. HP is impossible to reach for support and it's all I can do not to throw this thing out the window. I will NEVER again buy anything from HP, that's for sure.
HP should support its products
HP should make products that work
Printing should not be this hard!

@AbbyC224, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
I’m really sorry to hear about your frustrating experience with the HP ENVY Inspire 7220e. It’s incredibly frustrating when a product doesn’t live up to expectations, especially after investing in it, and it sounds like you’ve dealt with more than your fair share of issues.
Issue 1: Printer thinks it’s out of paper
Even small pieces of paper can cause the printer to think it’s out of paper.
If the sensor that detects paper is dirty, it might misread the paper tray. Gently clean it with a soft cloth.
Make sure your printer’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes, these glitches are fixed with new software updates.
You may refer to this guide for troubleshooting steps: HP Printers - An 'Out of Paper' error displays, printer does not pick paper | HP® Support
Issue 2: Won’t print in color from your laptop
This sounds like it could be a driver issue or a configuration problem with the printer settings. Here’s what I suggest:
Go to the print dialog box when trying to print and check if it’s set to “Black & White” instead of “Color.”
Go to HP’s website and download the latest drivers for your printer specifically for macOS 12.0 Monterey. Sometimes outdated or corrupted drivers can cause color printing issues.

I hope this helps.
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your input. So far, no luck. The paper sensor is clean and there is no paper caught anywhere. I was able to download firmware but my laptop (MacBook Air M2) cannot install it, it keeps crashing. So at the moment there is, sadly, no solution.
If you have any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks again.

Hey @AbbyC224,
Thank you for your response.
Ugh, that’s just beyond frustrating — you’re doing all the right things, and still getting nowhere. 🥴 A printer that constantly thinks it’s out of paper and won’t print in color from a brand-new MacBook Air is not just annoying — it’s completely unacceptable. Let’s try to dig a little deeper and get you some practical steps that might actually do something this time.
“Out of Paper” Error — But It’s Not
You’ve already cleaned the sensor and confirmed no jams. If the firmware installer is crashing, that could mean it’s not playing nice with macOS Monterey or M2. Let’s try another route that’s been effective for others:
Restart the Printer
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
- Wait for 60 seconds and connect the power cord back in.
- Turn on the printer.
Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)
- Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.
Refer to this guide: HP ENVY Inspire 7200e, 7900e Printers - Color or black ink not printing, other print quality issues ...
Take care and have a good day.
