Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Shortly afte rI got the printer, it wouldn't recognize 4x6" photo paper.  Error: Load paper and press OK,

In December I was able to print 4x6 photos on 5x7 paper.  Now it won't even recognize 5x7 paper.  If I open and close the paper tray, taking out and repositioning the 5x7.  it was recognizing it occasionally.  Now, nothing.    Instant Ink would be great, if I could print photos.

Hi @Chuckmnt,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I'd like to help!

To assist better -

  • Are you able to make copies using the printer?
  • What is the type and weight of the photo paper you are using?
  • What's the application you are trying to print from? Have you tried printing from a different application or device?

Meanwhile, try the below suggestions -

Load photo paper into the photo paper tray

Load compatible photo paper into the photo tray on your HP printer.

NOTE:

Use the photo paper tray to print smaller-sized photos that are supported by your printer, such as 102 x 152 mm (4 x 6 in) and 127 x 178 mm (5 x 7 in).

  1. Remove any paper from the paper trays.

  2. Load the short edge of the photo paper print side down into the photo tray.

  3. Adjust the paper guides so they rest on the edge of the photo paper.

Adjusting the paper width guides so they rest on the edges of the photo paper

Print photos (HP Smart app)

In HP Smart, use the Print Photos tile to print photos from your computer or mobile device.

Windows, Mac

Print photos using the HP Smart app on your Windows or Mac computer.

  1. Open the HP Smart app, and then select your printer on the home screen.

If you do not have the HP Smart app, download it from 123.hp.com.

  2. Click the Print photos tile.

  3. Browse to and click the photo you want to print.

  4. In the Preview window, change any print job settings, and then click More Settings.

  5. Select the paper size, type, and tray where you loaded photo paper.

  6. Click OK, and then click Print to print the photo.

  • Are you able to make copies using the printer? - I can print fine with 8 1/2 x 11, color copies.  I think you're asking if I can make copies from the scanner.  I have not tried that.  I am away from home through the weekend and will try, but I don't expect to be able it. It doesn't recognize the photo paper is loaded.
  • What is the type and weight of the photo paper you are using? - I'm using HP Premium and Ultra photo paper.
  • What's the application you are trying to print from? Have you tried printing from a different application or device?  - I think it's Microsoft Photos.  Hard to find an "About" in the app.  It's the default app that comes up when I double-click on the photo.

I see how to print with HP Smart and will try that when I get back.  I'm not convinced this will help.  Shortly after I bought the printer it had trouble recognizing 4x6 photo paper, but recgonized 5x7 fine (almos tall of the time).  If I unloaded and loaded the 4x6 paper, sometimes it would recognize and print. I called tech support at the time and was on the phone for an hour, uninstalling, reinstalling, doing lots of diagnostics tests, etc. and then either ran out of time or got frustrated.  Didn't remember.  And since then it was printing on 5x7 regularly, thought I could live with it.  Bur last December, for Christmas, I needed to print 24 4x6 photos, with 3 copies of each.   Grrrrrrrr.  Then it stopped printing on 5x7.  AGGGGGGHHHHH

In December I was able to print lots of 4x6 photos on 5x7 paper, and of course had then to trim it down, for which I bought a paper cutter!  But When I wrote to this form, it wasn't even recognizing 5x7 - well, it did a few times, after unloade and reloading.  But then  wouldn't do it after several attemps and my frustration  level said, "Quit."

Let's try and uninstall the printer software from the root level on your PC and install the full feature printer software.

First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.

  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP printer entries and uninstall them.
    • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
    • Restart your computer.
    • Click the bottom-left Start button on desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.
    • Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.
    • Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Printer” – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device un-install pop-up, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device".
    • Also, check the entries under "printer queue" and "imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says “Unknown device”.
    • Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
    • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
    • Again, go running window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
    • Once done you can try cleaning out your temporary files and cached files. You can try using automated applications like some cleaner software's that you can download from the internet.
    • Now restart your computer again.
    • Open the Run window again, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.
    • Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.
    • Now scroll up and go to “Function Discovery Provider Host” – right-click and select properties – Change the startup type to “manual” and start the service.
    • Repeat the same exercise on “Function Discovery Resource Publication” as well
    • Windows image acquisition stop and restart the service

Install all the available Windows updates

If it is been a while since you updated your Windows, that is the main reason why Windows says your HP printer driver is unavailable. Here are the steps how to do a Windows Update to install all accessible operating system update.

If you are accessing Windows 10, then these steps are for you.

  1. Hit the Start menu and write an update. After that, click on the “Check for updates” option.
  2. Tap on the “Check for updates” option.
  3. After clicking on that option, Windows will install the updates automatically.
  4. When Windows completes all its updates, start your computer again and attempt to print a file to check if your printer works.

Reinstall the drivers from the Software and drivers page

If the error persists, Try installing the printer with a windows built-in driver

Hope this helps!

I will try this when I get back around that printer next week.  Uninstalling and reinstalling was what I did when I originally had the problem, but I will try it again. I just have little hope for that fixing things.

Sounds good , keep me posted with the results.
