HP Ink Tank 315

This HP printer has stopped working due to a driver problem as shown below. I have:

  • Uninstalled driver from Add/Remove programs repeatedly
  • Uninstalled driver from the "printui /s" dialog
  • Reinstalled latest drivers countless times
  • Reset printer by pulling plug while connected.
  • Connected cable to all possible USB ports in the CPU and motherboard
  • Executed "sfc /scannow" until I'm blue in the face
  • Uninstalled all recent windows updates
  • Restarted computer more times than I can remember

The result is the same: I can only print the “Printer Information”  page from the horrid “HP Smart” dialog, but Notepad does not print, and Office Word 2019 directly refuses to print nor configure the printer settings as shown.

Word 2019 > PrintWord 2019 > Print

Word 2019 > Printer Preferences linked textWord 2019 > Printer Preferences linked textHP "Smart"HP "Smart""Fix the problem and retry." Yes, that was really helpful."Fix the problem and retry." Yes, that was really helpful.Of course it isn't.Of course it isn't.

The "%1 is not a valid Win32 application error" in the actual, Windows-native printer preferences dialog seems to be the key here.

As a side note, my favorite error is the "Unknown printer status. Fix the problem and retry."

Did an HP programmer really insert that error message in a production environment driver shipped to zillions of users worldwide? Of course, "fix the problem", why didn't I think about that earlier... that was really, really helpful. My compliments to your programmers

I've wasted an entire afternoon with this, and my boss is about to set fire to the printer (I couldn't agree more) and buy an EPS0N printer, which are more expensive but do work, and consumables are far cheaper as we all know. Not even chatGPT could help someone to fix an HP driver in Windows 10.
