HP MFP M283cdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

For the past several days, my printer has been cycling on and off and showing "Error 79" when it restarts.

It restarts within 30 sec to 1 min of the restart.  This is incredibly annoying to the point where you want to throw it from the window.  It does not stay on long enough to run many reports or try to update an old firmware.

Hi @jrd-mn,

I'd like to help!

Let's try a power reset on the printer

Reset the product

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Wait at least 60 seconds.

Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

Reconnect the power cord to the printer.

Turn the printer on. HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Also, try updating the printer's firmware -HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

If the issue persists, I'd suggest you Contact HP in your region regarding the service options for your printer

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

The reset did not help.  ANy other suggestions?

Try disconnecting your router from the internet and seeing if the problem stops.

If so, block the printer's IP address from being able to access any internet port via your router's admin page

Not ideal, but worked for me as a temporary workaround.

Good luck!

Lucky for me ( I guess) is that I purchased the unit at Costco.  I called the Costco tech support group.  When they could not help they patched me directly through to HP support.  The HP support person was very good and very patient.  He was almost to the point of giving up and sending me a new unit when we got the problem fixed.  When the unit would restart every 30 seconds we had to work within that time to turn off the WiFi for the unit.  Then we went into the menu-settings-network setup-network services and turned off IPv6 (I think).  This solved the reset problem.  It took a few attempts to do it quick enough prior to the printer restarting.  Thanks to the HP support person.

Same issue. Reboots if I turn on the wifi or plug in the network cable. IPV6 is turned off. Still happens to me though.

Can't check for an update because it requires network access. So frustrated.

I found a solution that worked for me from a user in another post:
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printers-Knowledge-Base/Error-79-on-HP-Color-LaserJet-Pro-M280-M281-Mu...

Steps I took:

  1. Turn off wifi and/or unplug network cable.
  2. Turn off IPV6 as others have suggested
  3. Turn off for 30 seconds
  4. Restart and hold down the bottom right corner of the touchscreen during the restart cycle.
  5. Set up wifi again as your settings have been cleared.

I hope this helps others. I spent 3 hours hunting for a fix today. This happened 21 days after my service warranty ended and was completely avoidable if only they'd debugged their update. Not amused by HP at all. It will impact my next printer selection.
