I get the cleaning message and then a print error followed by that. Happens every few pages. I like to find out how to clean the feed roller and perhaps replace some of the rollers. There is nothing out there for the MFP 281 model, and no maintenance manual. Can anyone help? Thanks

Hi @sam716,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing feed roller issues with your HP MFP M281cdw printer, which can be quite frustrating. While there might not be specific guides available for your exact model, I can provide you with some general steps that might help in cleaning and potentially replacing the feed rollers.

  • Power Off the Printer: Before doing anything, make sure to turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source to avoid any accidents.
  • Access the Feed Rollers: Open the printer's paper tray and locate the feed rollers. They are typically rubber rollers that grip the paper and feed it through the printer.
  • Inspect for Debris: Use a flashlight to inspect the feed rollers for any debris, paper fragments, or dust accumulation. If you see any, carefully remove them using a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water or isopropyl alcohol. Be gentle to avoid damaging the rollers.
  • Cleaning the Rollers: If the rollers are visibly dirty, you may need to clean them more thoroughly. HP recommends using distilled or filtered water on a lint-free cloth to clean the rollers. You can moisten the cloth slightly with water and then gently wipe the rollers. Avoid using excessive moisture, as it can damage the printer.
  • Rotate the Rollers: After cleaning, manually rotate the rollers to ensure they move freely and there are no obstructions.
  • Replace Rollers (if necessary): If cleaning doesn't solve the issue and the rollers appear worn out or damaged, you might need to replace them. Replacement rollers can usually be purchased from HP or authorized resellers.
  • Perform Printer Maintenance: Once you've cleaned or replaced the rollers, perform any recommended maintenance tasks using the printer's onboard maintenance tools or software. This might include calibrating the printer or running a cleaning cycle.
  • Test Printing: After completing the cleaning and maintenance procedures, test print a few pages to see if the issue persists.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
