I PURCHASED ON AMAZON.COM COMPATIBLE INK JET CARTRIDGES FOR MY OFFICE JET PRO 9720   THEY HAVE NO BRANK NAME ALL IT SAYS IS 952XL FOR THE HP OFFICE JET PRO 8720   AMAZON GIVES FULL RETURN ON ANY ITEM THAT DOES NOT PERFORM  AFTER FIGHTING WITH MY HP 8720 FOR ONE HOUR   IT FINALLY ACCEPTED 3 OF THE CARTRIDGES IT REFUSES TO ACCEPT YELLOW IT IS STATING   CARTRIDGE EMPTY   WHICH IS  **bleep**   IT WAS BRAND NEW.   I KNOW HP WANTS EVERYONE TO BUY THEIR CARTRIDGES BUT AMAZON SELLS COMPATIBLES WITH MONEY BACK GUARANTEE

If you forget to pull the protective tab off the cartridge that can happen.

 

Also cleaning your print heads may help.

 

First thing you need to do though is go to Start/devices and printers, double click your printer to enter settings and locate and disable Cartridge Protection.
