Hello - Recently my printer and scanner just stopped working entirely out of nowhere. I have not recently updated operating systems (I'm on a Mac and have an update available but don't have enough space to actually do it). The error message says to restart the printer, which I have done several times. The message says if that does not work (it didn't) to contact support. So here I am. Any ideas?

@emhlpplz, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.
To assist you better, do you have any errors while trying to print or scan?
- Which application are you trying to print from?
- Have you tried printing different types of documents like PDF, Word, or Webpages and check if the issue persists?
Try making a standalone copy from the flatbed glass and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.
How is the printer connected to the Mac? Check the connectivity.
Update the printer firmware
Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your Mac.

Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

Thank you for your reply - The printer seems to be working again without any changes (beyond leaving it alone since I posted). I've printed a Word doc and image file successfully from my Mac. However, the scanner does not seem to be working still. I scanned from the Printers & Scanners application on my Mac - going to the correct printer and selecting open scanner. The error message I am receiving simply says, "The scanner failed to complete the overview scan." I then pressed the "Overview" button in that window, but the scanner still was not able to scan the image and I received the same error message. When I tried to scan from the printer/scanner, I received the original error message instructing me to restart the printer/scanner. I went to download the firmware but all I'm seeing is a link to installing the HP Smart App. Is this necessary to get the firmware? I'm not interested in setting it up.

I see that you are not able to scan from the Mac. You are trying to use the AirPrint option to scan and you do not want to use the HP Smart app.
It seems like the printer was not installed completely. We will have to reinstall the printer using the AirPrint driver.
Before that, use the HP Easy Scan app or Apple Image Capture app to check if that helps.
HP Easy Scan app can be downloaded from the App Store.
Let me know how it goes.
