HP OfficeJet 6978
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Just got a HP OfficeJet 6978 printer and trying to connect it to my wireless router.  I keep getting the message it can't connect.  Reason stated is the MAC Filtering is on in my router.  To either turn it off or enter the printer address manually.  I've done both.  First, MAC filtering is already off.  I even tried turning MAC filtering on and entering the printer's address into the router's allowed devices.  Neither works.  I still get the same message.  Frustrating as I'd thought a printer this smart wouldn't have trouble.  I have about 12 devices connected wirelessly to my router and this is the first time I've experienced anything like this.  BTW, the router I have is a Westell 327W series.

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Updating the printer firmware, resetting the network settings and then connecting the printer to a wireless network may resolve this issue. Let us try these steps:

  • If you are facing issues with MAC filtering, please contact your Internet service provider.

Step 1: Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your computer.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Step 2: Restart your network devices

  1. Turn off the Router, Printer, and the computer/ mobile devices.
  2. Wait for 60 seconds.
  3. Turn on the Router first and wait for all the lights to stabilize.
  4. Turn on the printer and allow it to configure itself.
  5. Turn on the computer/ mobile devices.

Step 3: Connect the printer to the wireless router

  1. From the home screen of your printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon .

  2. Touch the Setup icon .

  3. Touch Restore Network Defaults or Restore Network Settings, and then touch Yes to confirm your selection.

  4. After the default network settings are restored, touch the back arrow, touch Wireless Settings, and then touch Wireless Setup Wizard.

The printer searches for available networks.

  5. Touch the name of your wireless network.

  6. Type the WEP or WPA key (network password), and then touch Done.

If you do not know your network password, go to Find Your Wireless WEP, WPA, WPA2 Password.

Once the printer connects to the wireless network, the blue Wireless light on the control panel turns on solid.

  7. If the printer fails to connect to the wireless network, print a Wireless Network Test Report for further assistance.

Let me know how this goes.
