Hi @SRJW72,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the "Printhead Problem" error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6960 typically means that the printer is having trouble communicating with the printhead or detecting the printhead properly.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and possibly resolve the issue:

1. Check the Ink Cartridges

  • Ensure that the cartridges are correctly installed. They should click into place securely.
  • Verify that you’re using genuine HP cartridges. Sometimes non-HP cartridges can cause errors.

2. Clean the Printhead Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the printer cover to access the printhead.
  • Carefully remove the ink cartridges from the printhead.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  • Let the contacts dry for a few minutes before reinserting the cartridges.

3. Reset the Printer

  • Soft Reset:
    1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
    2. Wait for at least 60 seconds.
    3. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Full Reset:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
    3. Wait for 30 seconds.
    4. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
    5. Reconnect the power cord while still holding the power button.
    6. Release the power button after the printer powers on.

4. Update the Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Make sure your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can check and update the firmware through the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP Support website and downloading the latest firmware for your printer model.

5. Perform a Printhead Cleaning

  • If the printer recognizes the printhead but prints poorly, you can try running a printhead cleaning utility from the printer’s control panel or the HP software on your computer.

6. Check for Any Obstructions

  • Sometimes, paper jams or other obstructions can cause issues with the printhead. Check inside the printer for any bits of paper or other debris and remove them if found.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
