Dear cl851. Thanks so much.  Your solution is the only one that finally worked.

Finally -- this worked!! Thank you so much!

At least in MS Office 2011, for both Word and Excel, duplexing is not achieved by a checkbox in the main Print menu, as it is for the PDF work-around (which also works, but it's an extra step).

If you want to print double-sided, you need to use the "Layout" dropdown menu in the main Print menu. There you will find a further Two-Sided dropdown menu. Use "Long-Edge Binding" if you want both sides to have the same orientation.

(Short-Edge Binding" will put the top of one page even with the bottom of the second.)

See this HP support page for further documentation.

I am having the very same issue! Nothing suggested works~

What version of MS Word are you using?

As I mentioned above, in Office 2011, Double Sided is under the Layout portion of he Print menu. I just did it this afternoon on my printer and it worked fine.

I used this solution that "cl851"contributed earlier in this thread, and it worked great:

Let's try this again: I used this solution that "cl851"contributed earlier in this thread, and it worked great:

“Go to Microsoft Word and click print. Under printer click add printer. Click on your printer and give it a new name. Then under “use” click on select software. Scroll down to HP Officejet 6800 and click ok. Click add printer and when it says that you are adding a duplicate printer just click ok. For some reason when the “new” printer is selected it works.”

Same problem: everything would print two sided EXCEPT MS Word from my Mac laptop.

SOLUTION for me was RESET PAPER SIZE under PAGE SETUP:  File --> Page Setup --> Paper Size ---> ( then select from drop down menu) US letter.

For some whacky reason, the paper size had changed to index card letter. (I think this happened after I printed some 8 1/2 x 11 card stock).  I finally got an error message that "two sided printing is not available for Card Index Letter.  Anyway, as soon as I selected US letter for paper size, no problem with two sided printing from MS Word. (And, as soon as I amde the selection to US letter,  Card Index Letter disappeared from the drop down menu selection.

I hope this helps!

I have an OfficeJet Pro 6978 with the same problem: suddenly after a year and a half the duplex option doesn't show up in the print menu. I've tried all the solutions everyone has posted on this string, but nothing has worked. Are there any other options?
