The printer automatically tries to download a firmware update each day which always seems to fail and displays “Download Unsuccessful: The printer update could not be downloaded”. I have tried various things to resolve this including doing a factory reset, wired Ethernet connection, wireless connection via office network and also even via an unfiltered tethered mobile wifi connection.
The printer works fine otherwise but the automatic reboots to attempt to install updates is disruptive as I have to go to the panel each time and click ok to get it to come back online. FYI I subscribe to instant ink and the printer is out of warranty.

Hi @BeksWorrall,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If the firmware update for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8022 All-in-One Printer fails to install, there are several troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue.
- Check compatibility: Ensure that you are downloading the correct firmware update for your specific printer model (HP OfficeJet Pro 8022) and that it is compatible with your operating system.
- Internet connection: Verify that your printer is connected to the internet properly. A stable internet connection is essential for downloading and installing firmware updates.
- Restart printer and computer: Sometimes, a simple restart can fix temporary glitches. Turn off your printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on. Additionally, restart your computer before attempting the update again.
- Update method: HP printers usually offer multiple methods to update firmware, such as using a USB drive, over the network, or via the printer control panel. Try a different method to update the firmware and see if that resolves the issue.
- Disable firewall/antivirus: Sometimes, security software can interfere with firmware installations. Temporarily disable any firewall or antivirus software on your computer and try installing the firmware update again.
- Clear print queue: Ensure there are no pending print jobs in the queue that might interfere with the update process. Clear the print queue before attempting the firmware update.
- Factory reset: If none of the above steps work, you may try performing a factory reset on your printer. However, be cautious, as this will reset all settings to their default values. Instructions for a factory reset can be found in the printer's user manual or on HP's support website.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
