Problem solved after I removed the print cartridges, disconnected the power for a few minutes, plugged the printer to power, waited till it asked for cartridges, loaded the cartridges.  It still got stuck on "Validating ... Please wait" (on the printer LCD).  Hours later I came back and it finally cleared up and worked.

 

I have no idea why it did it.  Sometime last week I had replaced the color ink cartridges (HP one purchased at Costco) and had no problems inserting them and working with them.  Then, out of the blue this (the above described issue) happened.
