OfficeJet Pro 8710 printer - I cannot find a way to cancel the printing after it has started.  I have been using this printer for almost a year.  If there is a reason to cancel the print, there is NO "X" on the printer screen to select Cancel.  My only solution has been to pull out the paper supply.  Still appears to continue the print job when the paper tray returns to the printer.  This morning I looked online to get state tax forms and found five forms I needed to print.  From my iPad, I selected Print, but had no opportunity to choose the page numbers for printing on this website.  I had to race up to the second floor to remove the paper tray before it printed the 27 page booklet.  When I returned the tray to the printer, it continued to print pages 27, 26, and 25.  Now, I have turned the printer off.  The Community shows this a s a question in 2016 and 2017, but the answers do not apply to this printer.  There is NO "X" on the printer screen like I had on previous HP printers.  PLEASE ADVISE.

The User Guide mentions the red Cancel X for cancelling a Fax.  There is no mention of whether the option (X) shows up on the printer control panel during the first few seconds of having started a print job.

Regardless, you can cancel a print job once the job control has been turned over to the computer queue system.

Cancelling through the Windowds queue system is a bit more cumbersome than reaching out and touching a red X.

Unless "something is wrong" with the job -- or the job has progressed past the point where the queue controls the actions -- you can stop a current print job at the computer.

Cancel Print Job

If you catch the job quickly enough, print jobs can be cancelled on the printer.

The “cancel” button might be labeled as such or might present as a red X.

NOTE:  Where supported at all, it is normal for the “X” to show on the control panel only briefly.

Once the job is turned over to the print service, cancel the job from the print queue.

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Double-Left-Click on your printer icon > See what’s printing > Click (or Right-Click) on the job > Cancel

Exact wording varies.

OR

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Double-Left-Click on your Printer

Double-Left-Click on See what’s printing - Click (or Right-Click) on the job > Cancel

Exact wording varies.

OR

Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners > Click Open queue

Click (or Right-Click) on the job > Cancel

OR

Settings > Devices > Right-Click Printers & Scanners > Pin to Start

Then

Windows key > find the newly PINNED application tile Printers & Scanners

Move the application tile to a Tile Group that is easy to see and open quickly

Print Queue / Print Service Reset

If the print job will not cancel or if the print job is stuck in the queue

If the issue is due to Print Services being stuck / hung, the following should fix the problem.

Stop print service, clear the print folder, Start print service

Control Panel > icon view > Administrative Tools > Services

Scroll down, find, Right-Click, and Stop Print Spooler Service

Open File Explorer (formally Windows Explorer)

Navigate to the folder and Delete the files from folder C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS

Start Print Spooler Service

In windows on the desktop you should see a printer icon appear in the bottom right window bar. right click it and cancel printing.

DaveBCore,

Thank  you for your Reply to Cancel Printing.  Unfortunately, there is no icon for the printer in the lower right end of the Toolbar.  That would be a quick solution if you are standing/sitting by the printer AND the icon was in the toolbar.  I have become more of a “print through the iPad from the first floor location” when my printer is located upstairs.   Six months of limited stairs after surgery have changed my habit of up and down in a rush.  I HAVE learned not not to try to print a few pages from the IRS instruction booklet unless I am right in front of the printer.  Thank you for your suggestion anyway...

Dragon-fur,

I apologize.....when I Replied to your thorough answers and suggestions this past week, I Replied to the email which came to my Inbox.  I did not realize that it needed to be sent from the Community website.  I tried to retrieve it from my Sent mailbox to post it on the website with your detailed suggestions.  If you can do that, please do.  Otherwise I give you a Thumbs Up for your great Reply, even though it did not work for my problem.

Thank you again,

You are welcome.

Printing from iOS is not the same thing as having access to Windows commands, of course.  Smiling.

From the documentation, it appears that  Cancel Job is available in the Print Center.

HP Printers - How to Cancel a Print Job

I would guess that the HP Smart App for iOS also provides access to some form of job cancel.

If it is possible for practical reasons, consider moving the printer closer to your location.  Remember that if you are using the printer to fax, that you'll need a land-line phone line available near by (within reach of the phone cord).
