I recently started experiencing the same issue as described in https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printing-Errors-or-Lights-Stuck-Print-Jobs/HP-OfficeJet-Pro-8715-Print...but my OS is Windows 10. I get the error 3-5 times a day after the printer has been on for a while. After restarting it, it will work fine for a while until the error message appears again.
Unplugging didn't resolve it and it reports it's running the latest firmware. Cartridges report about 50% ink remaining.
How do I prevent this error from recurring?

Great news! I did a factory reset on the printer (Settings "gear" -> Printer Maintenance -> Restore -> Restore Factory Defaults) and so far that seems to have resolved the problem for me. I left it ~12 hours overnight in the default factory settings and it didn't ever error. This morning I re-connected it to my WiFi and it's been ~3 hours so far without error.
I'm not sure why I didn't try this earlier or why no one suggested trying this in any of the troubleshooting steps, but fingers crossed this factory reset will resolve the problem for good.

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:
- Firstly, let's update the printer's firmware, refer - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
Next, perform printer hard reset:
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Remove USB cable, if present.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
- Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thank you, @Echo_Lake for your suggestions. I followed your instructions. The printer reported that it was already up to date and the printer again displayed the same error message a couple of hours after performing the hard reset steps.
Do you have anything else we can try?

Thank you for posting back.
Let's try this:
Root level uninstall and reinstall printer drivers:
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP OfficeJet printer entries and uninstall them.
- Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
- Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
- Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
- Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
To reinstall, click here.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I followed your instructions and removed the printer drivers and reinstalled them. Unfortunately, this did not resolve the issue. What's the next troubleshooting step? Is there any way to view logs or more detailed information about the error message to see exactly what the problem is?

Thank you for posting back.
Let's try this:
Search for the Event Viewer. Alternatively, from the Control Panel, choose Administrative Tools and then Event Viewer. Within Event Viewer, navigate to each. If you still need additional technical assistance that can be better provided through one-on-one interaction or a remote session with our HP Support team if you would like to continue troubleshooting.
I would request you to contact our Support and our Support Engineers should be able to sort this out. HP Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

I am having the same problem. The printer goes into the error state when the computer is turned off, so I think this is a local printer error. I had the problem a couple months ago and unplugging the initial power off/power cord resolution steps worked then, but not now. I have gone through all of the steps above. Error returns after a couple hours.

Hi, I'm experiencing the exactly same problem. Did anybody solve somehow this issue? The amazing thing is that in the meanwhile in beetween two failure messages, the printer is scanning and printing perfectly fine. It would be sad to waste a printer which is perfectly working on the "mechanical" side. Sounds a lot like planned obsolescence...
