HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 won't print envelopes; it gives an error on paper size, and shoots the envelope out

Welcome to the HP Community --

Update / Edit - Remove bullet list format

Have you ever printed envelopes with this printer?

What?

It's not necessary to have done so, though some of the information below might be more recognizable should you be familiar with the process.

In general, the following explains how to print an envelope --

========================

Load Paper / Load Media

Load the envelopes according to the user manual -

User Guide – HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 Series  Page 20

Next,

Alert the Printer to the paper loaded in the intake tray - Tray and Paper

========================

EWS - Tray and Paper

EWS > HP Document / How-to (InkJet Printers – Classic Format)

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

NOTE:  Find printer IP address

Section Open the EWS over a local network orientation

OR

HP Laser Printers - Using the Printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Reminder

If asked enter the printer’s PIN number –

The default PIN might be located on the back or inside the printer (ink access area).

EWS – Tray and Paper Management / Paper > Trays

Classic EWS - InkJet Printers / Select other printers

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper (Management)

Select / Adjust settings for Paper Size / Type

Model and EWS version Dependent:  Advanced section

Click Apply to save changes

Custom size?

If your paper is a custom size, look for "Custom" in the full list of paper sizes.

Remember >> Printers with more than one tray might only support custom paper sizes and types in one of the available trays.

If EWS does not allow setting the paper size or size “Custom”,

If the printer includes a touchscreen display printer control panel,

Look for the setting for “Custom” in the Printer Control Panel after (re)loading the paper to be used

NOTE:  EWS Size Custom is not available for all printers

Example - EWS - Tray and Paper

Job Configuration

As best as can be done, the Paper Type must match the paper type set / adjusted in EWS (and / or printer control panel).

If the job setup balks because the Source (Tray) is set to some form of Automatic, Select the Tray.

Example - Word > Mailings > Envelope

If the size of envelope is not in your drop down paper size, select Custom and enter the dimensions.

  • The envelope, in spite of all other settings being as correct as possible is not a supported (custom) size and / or is unsuitable due to envelope color, print surface, thickness / weight.
