HP OfficeJet Pro 8720
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I connect the USB cable, the computer doesn't "see" the printer, it's not there.

I've tried 3 computers, 2  W10 machines and 1 mac, no luck

I've tried power cycling, rebooting.

The cable is fine, works on another printer.

Two tech support people have tried getting the printer on line, no luck.

Is there a way to  totally reset the printer?

@rih5342,

Good day. Thank you for posting your query in the HP community. I will be delighted to assist you here. Superb description of the issue. kudos to you for that.

The USB port on the printer should be faulty as you've tried different computers and the USB cable works on a different printer.

This printer comes equipped with wireless and ethernet support. So try these steps:

Then uninstall and reinstall the pritner at the root level by following these steps and use an ethernet cable to do it. You could go wireless also.

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Remove all instances of the same.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers.
  • Restart the PC again.

Then download the latest full feature driver from https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-8720-all-in-one-printer-series/790...  selecting the correct operating system.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

This should fix it for you.

USe an Ethernet cable.

If this does not do the trick, please download the Windows Built-in drivers by following instructions from this link: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01796879

Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. 🙂
