After the recent security update (2019-003) I lost the connection to the printer. I downloaded and installed the drivers and that worked fine, but when I tried running the firmware update things didn't work so well. The update hangs during the "Device Discovery" stage.
HP Officejet 7610/7612 Series Firmware Update
The Computer is a mid-2010 iMac and is connected to the printer via wireless, signal quality = 5..
The current printer firmware revision is EXM1CN1436AR, but my printer was hacked a while back so that may not be accurate. (https://fahrplan.events.ccc.de/congress/2011/Fahrplan/events/4780.en.html).
To make clear, I can print but can't update firmware.
On a related note, is port 9100 still accessable without any type of authentication (or did HP shut that down), and if so, how do I disable it?
Thanks for reading this.
Any suggestions are welcome.

It's possible that the printer is not able to connect to web services. Let's try these steps:
Please set a manual IP address and manual DNS servers for the printer. The steps on how to set a manual IP address can be found here.
For the DNS servers please use 8.8.8.8 for the Manual Preferred DNS Server and 8.8.4.4 for the Alternate DNS server. These are Google’s public DNS servers.
Once you assign a manual IP and Google DNS, try to update the printer firmware using the printer control panel display. If issue persists, try the steps available in this document.

Sorry for the time lag - first a move, then no internet connection for a month, then the update to 10.13.6 resulted in no printer connection, and no Bonjour. With no Bonjour the EasyStart wouldn't work. Reset the printer to factory default. Downloaded and installed an old Mavericks driver which gave me Bonjour. Then EasyStart would work. Updated drivers. I then set the manual ip, and set the DNS to 1.1.1.1. and 1.0.0.1. which has the benefits of giving no information to Google, and (due to the lighter workload) is faster.
Successfully ran the firmware updater (after manually entering the ip) and received the negative message that meant that the firmware I had was the newest version.
Wow. You would think that there would be a searchable table that listed the most recent firmware versions.
Giving you a big thumb's up!
