I have run HP Print and Scan Doctor which reports it has fixed the print queue. When it says to print a test page, I try but nothing prints. When it says to print the embedded test page, that does print. Then the Print Doctor suggests I delete the printer drivers and reload from HP Support which I have tried to no avail. The printer and my PC communicate as I have successfully scanned and saved photos. This problem started four days ago with no unusual or manual updates preceding the cease of ability to print from my PC. HP Smart suggested I reboot the printer, which I did. When I tried to print a document, I got a pop-up saying "HP8710 is in a error state." Help!

Hi @Iowa,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When your HP Officejet 8710 is showing an "error state" and won't print from your PC, despite successful scanning and other functions, it can be a frustrating issue. Here are some detailed steps to help you resolve this problem:
1. Check Printer Status and Connections
- Printer Status: Ensure the printer is powered on and connected to the same network as your PC if using a network connection.
- Connections: Verify that all cables are securely connected if using a USB connection. For a wireless connection, ensure the printer is connected to your Wi-Fi network.
2. Restart Devices
- Restart Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
- Restart PC: Restart your computer to clear any temporary issues.
3. Clear Print Queue
- Clear Queue: Clear any pending print jobs to ensure they are not causing a blockage.
- Open Control Panel -> Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on your HP Officejet 8710 and select "See what's printing."
- Right-click on each print job and select "Cancel."
4. Set as Default Printer
- Default Printer: Ensure the HP Officejet 8710 is set as the default printer.
- Open Control Panel -> Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on your HP Officejet 8710 and select "Set as default printer."
5. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers:
- Go to Control Panel -> Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on the HP Officejet 8710 and select "Remove device."
- Reinstall Drivers:
- Go to the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for your printer.
- Install the drivers and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.
6. Check for Windows Updates.
- Go to Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update -> Check for updates.
- Install any available updates and restart your computer.
7. Run Printer Troubleshooter.
- Go to Settings -> Update & Security -> Troubleshoot -> Additional troubleshooters.
- Select "Printer" and run the troubleshooter.
8. Check Printer Spooler Service.
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Scroll down to "Print Spooler" and ensure it is set to "Running."
- If not, right-click and select "Start." If it’s already running, right-click and select "Restart."
9. Firewall and Antivirus Settings.
- Temporarily disable your firewall and antivirus software and try printing again.
- If the printer works with the firewall/antivirus disabled, create an exception for the printer in your security software.
10. Factory Reset Printer.
- On the printer’s control panel, navigate to "Settings" -> "Printer Maintenance" -> "Restore."
- Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
