I've got exactly the same problem with a 7740 I just bought, on an HP Windows 10 HP laptop.
However it works 100% on a 10 year old Toshiba Windows 7 laptop.
*But* with the older laptop, I had to download the HPEasyStart software and run that to get the installation to work.
(With the Auto Install when I plugged the USB cable in, it said it couldn't find any of the drivers).
That took a lot longer than the automatic install, but everything now works rock solid (print, scan and FAX) on the old Win 7 laptop.
It sounds like I might have to do the same thing with the Win 10 laptop, but because it's a company machine, it needs an Admin login, and I'm waiting for IT to get back to me.
But I mean c'mon guys, an HP printer that can't talk to an HP laptop?!!

Hi@Maasden,
Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!
I see you are experiencing issues with the HP Officejet Printer gets error out of paper.
I have a few recommendations
- The paper might not be engaged with the feed rollers. The paper-width guide is pressed against the paper stack too tightly. The paper tray is not completely inserted into the product. The paper settings in the print driver do not match the paper loaded in the paper tray.
- An HP printer that says it is out of paper basically reflects an issue with the sheets that have been loaded in it. This common problem can be noticed when the paper input tray has been overloaded. Also, the paper feed or paper pick rollers may have been affected by dust or moisture.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
