We have a now out of warranty HP Officejet Pro 8600 that has been working fine. Had a message to change out one of the color ink cartridges (951) in order to keep printing. Bought genuine HP 951XL Z10 package. When replace old 951 with 951XL, error message that ink cartridges are not compatible. Machine should accept this cartridge we think and now keeps error message even after unplugging and plugging back in, etc.
Have tried going through HP support but never able to talk to anyone, only virtual assistant which has not helped. The firmware is up to date.
Saw on other forums people had this issue after January 2017 when new types of Z## cartridges came out. First time for us to have to switch out cartridges that have not been accepted.
Anyone have any suggestions to get the printer to accept the genuine HP 951xl cartridges?
thank you for any help.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
If you insert your old ink, do you still get the error message?
Try the steps from here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-officejet-pro-8600-e-all-in-one-printer-series-n911/4322914/...

If your like me you have had this for a while. A year or so ago HP decided to screw all of us by making it difficult to get ink. If you look at the ink you put in there is a little marking Z10 on it. Thats the new ink that's not compatable. You need Z20 ink which if memory serves is sold in Europe now. I have a bunch of the Z20 I bought when I first had the problem. I have not tried refilling the old Z20 color cartridge but that may work. if you threw out the Z20 cartridge your probably screwed because the updated software knows the difference now. I believe that HP website may have info on it.
