HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer
Linux

Hello,

I’m experiencing an issue with my HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One. The display shows the following error:

"There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn the printer off and then on again. If the problem persists, contact HP."

I have tried several troubleshooting steps:

  • Turned the printer off and unplugged the power cord multiple times

  • Replaced all ink cartridges with brand-new, original HP cartridges

  • Removed the printhead and cleaned the contacts using professional electronic cleaner

  • Performed a semi-full reset multiple times

Unfortunately, none of these steps resolved the issue—the error still persists.

What’s especially frustrating is that the error cannot be bypassed or ignored. The buttons on the control panel become disabled, so I can’t even access the menu or settings.

The printer is not very old—it has printed only about 3,000 pages—and the interior is clean and well-maintained.

At this point, I’m considering trying a firmware downgrade to see if it resolves the issue. If not, I’d also like to try updating to the latest firmware version. The current firmware installed is FDP1CN2022AR, but I’m having trouble finding both older and newer versions of the firmware.

Could anyone advise where to download the appropriate firmware versions and whether a firmware change might help fix this error?

Thank you in advance,
Ben

Hi @ben10101042,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We truly understand how frustrating this situation is, especially after you've invested significant time and effort troubleshooting your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer on Linux. The “There is a problem with the printer or ink system” error you're experiencing typically indicates a critical hardware fault, most related to the printhead assembly or ink system electronics. Given all this, you're correct that firmware modification may be your last option.

Steps you can try:

1: Basic Hard Reset

  1. Turn on the printer (if it's not already on).
  2. With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall, then into the printer.
  6. Turn the printer back on.

2: Firmware and Driver Support for Linux

Linux users can access drivers and firmware via:

🔗 HP Linux Imaging and Printing | hp's Developer Portal

From there, you can:

  • Download the latest HPLIP version compatible with your distro.
  • Access firmware loaders and diagnostic tools.
  • Use hp-firmware or hp-setup to manage firmware and device setup.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
