I have seen a few carriage issues but none with the same problem as I have -
Printer carriage is stuck all the way over to the right. 2 of the cartridges are not properly “home” and even if you squeeze your fingers around to push them back in they don’t stay. Meanwhile there is no way to get the printer carriage to move to the middle. It does not appear to be the cartridges preventing this even though they are not home? Maybe there is some gear that kicks in if the cartridges are not home to prevent the carriage from moving? Some replies here and issues have said they were able to manually move the printer carriage but an HP reply did say don’t force it. It’s impossible to move it. Totally stuck.
What do I do? How do I move the carriage? Only then can i trouble shoot the issue with the cartridges.

Hi @GH123123123,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're dealing with a frustrating issue. If the printer carriage is stuck and you're unable to move it manually, here are a few steps you can try to resolve the problem:
1. Turn Off and Unplug the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Leave it unplugged for at least 1-2 minutes to ensure that all electrical components are reset.
2. Check for Obstructions
- Inspect the printer for any obstructions or debris around the carriage area. Sometimes, small bits of paper or other debris can get lodged and prevent movement.
3. Gently Move the Carriage
- With the printer still unplugged, gently try to move the carriage from side to side. If the carriage moves even slightly, continue gently moving it to the center.
- Avoid forcing the carriage as it could cause further damage.
4. Check Cartridges
- Remove the cartridges carefully and check if there is any visible damage or misalignment. Sometimes, misaligned cartridges can prevent the carriage from moving properly.
5. Reinstall Cartridges
- Reinstall the cartridges, making sure they are firmly seated in their slots. Ensure that each cartridge clicks into place.
6. Reboot the Printer
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on. The carriage should attempt to move to the center position for cartridge alignment.
7. Run Printer Diagnostics
- If the carriage moves and the printer powers on, run the printer diagnostics through the HP Smart app or the printer’s control panel to identify any issues.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Gaya1239 for your prompt response.
I have already tried all those suggestions - rebooting the printer basically. But as I think I described, the issue is more complicated.
The 2 L hand cartridges have slipped out of the carriage and won’t go back in.
Meanwhile it is impossible to manually move the carriage at all. Maybe there is some manual lock that clicks on if the cartridges aren’t properly home.
I can’t get the cartridges to click home and I also cannot access the carriage to either try to get them home or get them out or to manually move the carriage. So unless there is some mechanical solution to this and some way to take the printer apart and access the carriage when it’s stuck over to the R then I guess I just need to throw it out? Seems crazy as it was fine before and as the problem seems obvious, it’s just the solution of course is far from obvious…
So to summarise:
1. Done - changes nothing, unsurprisingly.
2. Done - nothing apparent
3. It won’t move and I can’t force it
4. This is a weird suggest given the whole issue results from the carriage being stuck to the right. If that is the case it’s not possible to get the cartridges out.
5. Ditto - although as I have said 2 cartridges are not properly home
6. Done - it probably does try to return (the does make various sounds one of which seems to be to engage the carriage) but given #3 above it seems unlikely this will happen automatically.
7. The printer itself tells me what’s wrong and I have already pointed out 2 key issues (carriage + cartridge) so not sure this will help
