HP PSC 1512
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

Have an HP PSC 1512, just over a year old.  It has performed flawlessly for print, copy, and scan functions.   I rarely scan so unaware it had ceased working until I tried to use it today.  Nothing elaborate, just old-school scanning a document to the desktop and not wireless.  A pop-up message said the scanner was either busy or not connected.  I once restored the scan function on my old HP 1510 model with a simple reinstall.  So I tried that on the 1512 but to no avail.  I ran a utilities cleaning, powered the printer back up, then tried the installer disk.  A pop-up message advised that either I did not have a printer connected at all or it just couldn't be recognized.  Next I downloaded driver software from the HP site but the end result was again "series not recognized".  At that point I noticed verbiage on the software page that said This document is for Apple computers that are using Firefox 33 for web browsing.   Firefox has implemented many upgrades and now we're up to v.45.0.1  Could this be why the scan feature isn't working and the unit not recognized?  The print and copy features continue to work well and the HP Utility reflects all the pertinent details that I am used to seeing.   Loss of scanning isn't a deal-breaker but is there software available for the latest Firefox or settings that can be changed?  Or am I just spinning my wheels?    Thanks.

Hi there,
Welcome to the HP Community @Peaches46,

I came across your post about the scanning issues you're facing with your Mac running 10.6, and HP Printer. I am unable to find the model "PSC 1512", would you possibly have the Deskjet 1512? If so, the steps below are all suggested for you! Let me know if you happen to have another model.

Troubleshoot the hardware to begin and try a power reset. Also ensure the printer is plugged in directly to a wall outlet.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the unit.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the unit.
If the printer does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.

Try scanning using the HP software.

If the scanning still does not work, try these steps in order:

  1. Reset the printing system
  2. Repair disk permissions
  3. Restart the Mac
  4. Click this link, download and install the Full Feature Driver and software: HP Deskjet 1510 All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Drivers
  5. Click this link and try scanning using the different scanning methods: How to Scan (OS X v10.6)

If you have any troubles with the steps, let me know and I will do my best to help.

Hello Rainbow7000 ~

I followed the steps you suggested and at the end I was momentarily startled by a strange noise coming from my printer.....took me a moment to realize it was the sound of a document being scanned to the desktop!

Sorry for the initial confusion over my printer model.  Hadn't intended to toss you a red herring.  I think of it as a PSC for the functions it provides (print, scan, & copy) when in fact it is a Deskjet 1512.

Thank you so much for your kind assistance and warp-speed response.  Not only were my misconceptions dispelled about what caused the issue in the first place, but this turned out to be a most gratifying experience.  Kudos!
