I recently changed my ink cartridges and I do not have the scanning software set up. The alignment page was printed and it asked me to put it on the printer and scan it. Previous printers I used to simply feed the alignment page. I am getting on and off a cartridge problem message to remove and reinstall the cartridge making sure it is properly installed. I have done this several times and feel confident they are installed properly. Only a small portion of the page is printing, if at all.

@JTPA, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

You need not install a scanning software to scan the alignment page. Let us try these steps to resolve this issue with the ink cartridge:

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Perform step 3 from this document.

  1. Touch Setup on the printer control panel, touch Tools, and then touch Align Cartridges.

  2. Wait for the alignment page to fully eject from the printer.

  3. After the alignment page prints, lift the scanner lid, place the alignment page with the print side down on the scanner glass. Position it according to the engraved guides around the glass.

  4. Placing the alignment page on the scanner glass

  5. Close the scanner lid, and then touch OK on the printer control panel. The printer aligns the ink cartridges.

  6. After the printer aligns the ink cartridges, touch OK on the control panel.

If the alignment fails, clean the ink cartridges and retry the alignment process.

  1. On the printer control panel, swipe left on the display, and then touch Setup .

  2. Touch Tools, and then touch Clean Cartridges.
