Printer no longer takes commands from computer to print. No alarm lights; screen on printer just doesn't change. It will print a test page if initiated from printer, but not from computer (Lenovo, about 2 years old, Windows 10). It was working fine 2 weeks ago. Could aftermarket ink cartridges do this? Used them before with no problems, seems to me if it was cartridge the test page wouldn't be right. Even tried reloading the original disc that came with printer, after online help didn't solve problem, but window comes up saying it can't be completed. Tried 2 different cables, in both USB 2.0 (black) and 3.0 (blue) ports, makes no difference. Cables seem OK; when I plug in printer, musical notes occur from computer, but no window occurs saying found new hardware. It's as if the computer no longer recognizes the printer. Tried uninstall; reinstall difficult and not sure done right, but I can get a window on computer saying print test page, it shows up in printer queue as "in error". Tried removing one ink cartridge, going to back-up mode, no help. If I plug in a picture card to printer, it will print photo.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Let's run the HP Print and Scan Doctor:
Use this link for details on using the HP Print and Scan doctor: https://hp.care/2JyaC93
If the issue persists, let's do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:
Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
15.) Restart the computer.
Once done, please download and install the software from here:

When I go to and get "Easy Start" window, it says printer not found, yet when I plug in the USB cable, musical notes sound from computer, indicating to me the hook-up is good. But retry doesn't work, keep getting same message
