While trying to put in a new black ink somehow the carriage which holds the ink moved all the way to the right and is  now stuck there so I can not insert the replacement cartridge.

I had already removed the black ink cartridge but had not yet replaced it with a new one.

I get the error message Cartridge problem One or more cartridges appear to be missing or damaged.

@StaceyB719, Welcome to HP Support Community!

Going through your post I see that the printer has carriage jam issues. Let us try to isolate and resolve the issue.

Follow the steps from the document  'Carriage Jam' or 'E3' Error Displays.

Additionally, Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
