HP SMART app says my printer is offline. I've uninstalled/reinstalled countless times. The printer prints from my computer but I need to options for scanning only provided in the HP SMART app. All of a sudden it can't my printer. My printer is fully online with my computer. It is only the app that isn't working. I rely on it for my needs. I can't find a solution anywhere!

What are the scan options to which you refer?

That is, what is the "HP Smart" application providing that no other software can do?

Commentary

There may not be a solution in that the HP Smart application is first and foremost an application for Mobile devices.  It is true there is a version for Windows 10 - I am not aware of any way to force the application to work.  The application is self-contained.  You have tried the remove/install from the Microsoft store.

Try Restarting Everything, including your router, computer, printer.

Other Options...

If the printer software is working, then it is likely, at least, that the network is OK and that the printer can scan using methods found in Windows.

There are many scan options, programs, and methods.  Some programs / software options are more robust than others.  In particular, much depends on exactly what you are trying to accomplish.

HP Scan Extended

Download, save, and install   HP Scan Extended – Exceptional free HP scan program:  HP Scan Extended features include (and are not limited to): Single, Multiple scans, Image and PDF scans, Email as PDF / JPEG, Source selection, Page Size choices include Auto-Detect (extracts image / document boundary).  May include OCR (Save as Editable Text).

NOTES

  • HPSE is an older subset of the printer software; features are very similar to scan software included in 2015 or newer Full Feature Software packages.
  • If you have the newer version of the scan software inside your Full Feature Software, use that: Printer Assistant shortcut icon on Desktop (named for printer) > Scan a document or image (wording varies).
  • Although the HPSE program works as a separate program, HPSE is dependent on the infrastructure provided by the printer software. The Full Feature Software for your printer should be installed before installing HPSE.

Nice scan software for PDF

NAPS2 -- Not another PDF Scanner – free program scans PDF files and image(s) as .jpeg or PDF file(s).  Includes OCR.  Download, save, and install to use.

HP Scan and Capture from Windows Store (Requires Windows 8 or higher)

Thank you for the reply. The app was installed on my desktop when the printer was initially installed. I've been using it ever since. I use it for its ease and most importantly that I can upload a previously scanned pdf and add additional pages. I have hp scan extended and as far as I can tell it lacks this feature which is essential for me and why I am trying so desperately to fix it. I understand that is is mostly used for mobile devices but up until recently the app made for windows 10 had worked seemlessly. I may try your other recommendations alongside trying to correct HP Smart app. So far, nothing suggested has helped. Thank you for the tips.

You are welcome.

Yes, Importing pages to the scan is a very nice feature.  I've only used it a couple of times.

You are correct; in so much that I am aware HPSE does not provide this feature.  I will take a look at it when I have time.  Smiling.

NAPS2 supports this feature (sort of).  Silly software only supports importing PDF files that were originally made using NAPS2 software.  Annoying.   On the bright side, once the PDF file is saved within the NAPS2 environment, you can "add" / Import pages and the Adobe Reader DC can open / view / print the file (just like any "other" PDF file).

If you have not done so, try the Reset option on the application

Settings > Apps and Features >

Scroll down, find HP Smart

Options:

  • Advanced options
  • Move
  • Uninstall

Click Advanced options

Scroll down

Reset

If you decide to uninstall the HP Smart software, after the software is uninstalled, Restart the computer before installing a fresh version of HP Smart.
