I cannot get my Officejet Pro 6230 to print using HP Smart Print. I solved the problem of it canceling every print job. Now it accepts the print job but the printer won't actually print it. It just sits in the print queue until I cancel it.

There is a critical October 2022 Firmware update - check - if not installed, take care of that first:

HP Officejet Pro 6230 ePrinter series Firmware Update

=================================

Background and Preparation

At this writing, HP Smart - in general - supports printers back to about 2010 -- this printer falls within the range of "generally supported".

If installed with (and by) HP Smart, HP Smart Printing, is an auxiliary print queue that does provide some nice options.

HP Smart Printing is a separate print queue - the shortcut for it is designated with a "white printer" icon on the Desktop.

Will HP Smart Printing work with this printer?  Maybe.

The Full Feature Software is available for your printer and Windows 10.  The version of the software is fairly old -- but it is

rated as fully functional for that version.  The Full Feature Software includes HP Scan.

The full driver printer software (Full Feature Software) provides a foundation for installing and using other print and scan software.  For example, with the full driver installed, you can print in Word, Adobe Reader DC, and you install and use HP Scan and Capture.

For those reading

Incorrect file / folder Permissions can cause an immediate cancellation of the job as soon as it enters the print queue.

If Print Services are stuck or corrupted, it might require that you stop print services - rebuild the setup - restart the service.

Example - Folder Permissions and Print Service / Queue Reset

What to do?

Not sure --

If all else fails, though, do consider using the Full Feature Software instead of HP Smart.

Consider / Try

Generally, if the settings in HP Smart are incorrect, the job will balk or fail as the job is submitted and generate an error.

That said, there might be circumstances where the settings are "just off" and the job gets stuck in the queue.

This is uncommon, I think.

Recheck the secondary menu More > Shortcut selection and the settings for paper and quality.

==============================

Remove / Install the full driver printer software

Printer - Full Feature Software - Install

If you have not done so, consider

  • HP Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software - supports printing and scanning from the web, printing in in other software and programs (for example, Word), and provides access to the full range of Printing Preferences / Shortcuts.  The full driver adds at least two shortcuts to the Desktop:  Printer Assistant and HP Scan.  If the printer model includes built-in Fax hardware, the software supports the setup and use of the Fax driver.  No Sign-in required.

If the full driver printer software is (already) installed but not working,

  • Uninstall any printer software from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features
  • Restart the computer and sign in.

Next,

  • Check (for the Printer) in Devices and Printers  > If found, Right-Click Printer and Remove -- If any changes are made, that is, you remove anything, Restart the computer and sign in.

Next,

  • If using a printer USB cable between the printer and the computer, disconnect the cable before installing the printer software.
  • Download and Save the Full Feature Software installation package or the Easy Start Software

Installation

  • Open File Explorer
  • Navigate to the folder in which you saved the installation file  (likely Downloads)
  • Right-Click on the installation package and “Run as Administrator
  • If using a printer USB cable between the printer and the computer, connect the cable when instructed (near the end of the installation).
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

====================================

The installation of the full driver adds at least two shortcuts to the Desktop:

Printer Assistant

HP Scan
