There is obviously a well known issue with this printer suddenly giving the E1 error message. There are lots of posts about this with no legitimate answers from HP as to why this is actually occuring. All we see are the canned responses about "reset to factory defaults", "firmware update", reinstall drivers etc. etc.

Clearly these printers have a manufacturing defect given the number of posts on the HP community forums alone about this issue, and its not just this printer model, the exact behavior is seen with other HP models as well.

My particular printer is about 18 months old and I have barely used it, I have only used less than 1/3rd of the ink that came with the printer brand

When you call in for support and its out of warranty, all they want to do is sell you on the "upgrade" to the HP All-In printer and ink subscription plan.

Smells awfully like a class action lawsuit in the making for HP printers having this issue.

Hi @AnoshW,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The E1 error on HP SmartTank 7300 Series printers typically indicates a problem with the printer's ink system. Given your experience and the widespread nature of this issue, it does seem like many users have encountered similar problems. Let’s explore what might be causing this error and potential steps you can take to address it.

Common Causes of E1 Error

Ink System Issues:

  • The error might be due to a malfunction in the ink system, which could involve clogged ink lines, a faulty printhead, or problems with the ink cartridges themselves.

Software or Firmware Problems:

  • Sometimes, a glitch in the firmware or software can cause such errors. Updating or resetting the printer might help, but it doesn’t always resolve the issue if it’s hardware-related.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

For others searching for a fix for this, I tested printing from a MacBook and it worked fine.

This led me to believe it was a driver issue......which is surprising because all 3 of my windows PCs suddenly started having this issue without me changing anything.

I found that if I completely uninstalled the HP printer from the machine and uninstalled the HP software, and then reinstalled, it apparently resolved the issue.

Clearly there is a bad driver at play that was automatically updated on windows PCs and caused this issue. I wish HP would properly diagnose the issue and figure out why this actually happened.
